County Extension
Office urges home
garden spraying
Home gardeners are re
minded that a regular sum
mer spraying program is the
best way to avoid a harvest of
wormy cherries, apples and
pears, according to John P.
Nordheim, County Extension
Agent.
Two insects, the codling
moth and the cherry fruit fly,
are making their annual
appearance and control mea
sures are needed.
The codling moth is the
adult stage of the worm that
infests apples and pears. The
adults lay eggs throughout the
summer, thus making control
difficult.
Several insecticides provide
excellent control. Diazinon
and methoxychlor should be
applied to apple and pear
trees now and repeated at
three week intervals through
the summer. Insecticides
should be applied before 7
a.m. or after 9 p.m. when
temperatures are cool and
when beneficial bees are not
working.
No completely effective or
ganic methods of controlling
codling moth have been found.
Some techniques may reduce
damage. Parasitic wasps may
be purchased but they may not
be practical for the home
owner.
After cherry fruit flies
emerge in late May and early
June, they begin laying eggs
under the skin of developing
cherries. The eggs hatch in
five to seven days and
maggots mature in 14 to 20
days.
Once eggs have been de
posited in cherries, nothing
can be done to prevent wormy
cherries. Control is directed to
killing the flies during the
interval between their emer
gency and the time they
deposit eggs, a period of about
ten days. Methoxychlor, Sevin
and Diazinon are recommend
ed for use against the cherry
fruit fly.
Sprays should be applied
beginning in late May with
repeat applications every
seven to ten days unjil
harvest. The flies rest on
foliage other than cherry, so
spray nearby trees and shrubs
if possible.
For more information, con
tact your local county exten
sion agent.
