ball team drew strong praise
from their coach, Dale Hol
land, Monday at the annual
Spring Sports Dessert at the
Heppner High School Cafe
teria. Finishing the season with an
8-7 record and third place in
the Columbia Basin Confer
ence's Western Division, the
Mustangs accounted for a .950
- fielding average which Coach
Holland felt was the team's
strength.
' Mike Stookey, the team's
leading hitter and first base
man, received the most valu
able player award with a .413
Spray marathon
along John Day
The Spray Recreation and
Amusement Club will sponsor
its 14th Annual half-marathon
run along the scenic John Day
River from Service Creek to
Spray on Highway 19, Satur
day, May 26.
It started 13 years ago with
five runners and last year 216
of the 246 runners in the race
finished.
Trophies will be awarded to
the first three finishers (no
duplicates) in five divisions:
Division I, men under 18;
Division II, men, 18-29; Divi
sion III, men, 30-40; Division
IV, men 41 and over; Division
V, women. There will also be a
trophy for the oldest finishing
runner. All who complete the
run will receive a certificate
ul accomplishment.
Ki iners must complete re
gistration forms prior to the
day of the race and entries
accompanied by a personal
statement of fitness and a $3
entry fee, payable to the Spray
Rodeo Association and must
be received before May 25,
1979. Anyone wishing to re
ceive a result sheet of runners
and times must enclose a
self-addressed, stamped en
velope. Additional entry forms
may be obtained by writing to
Rahlie Goodell, Race Direc
tor, Corncob Creek Ranch,
Fossil, Oregon 97830.
The run is open to any
amateur, physically fit man or
woman, 18 years of age or
older and youngsters under 18
with written consent of parent
or guardian.
No runner may receive any
assistance except verbal en
couragement. Accomodations for dressing
will be provided at Spray High
School. All runners must re
gister there before 7 a.m. to
receive, their assigned num
ber. Transportation will be

The annual Spray Rodeo
will be held on Saturday and
Sunday, May 26 and 27 at 1 : 30
p.m. preceded by a parade
each day. Dances will be held
Friday and Saturday nights,
May 25 and 26 at 10 p.m. in the
Spray Gymnasium. Bring
friends and have fun.
Rietmann
places
seventh
lone High School's Jerry
Rietmann leaped 11'2" to
place seventh in the long jump
at the High School Single A
Track Meet at Lewis and
Clark, Portland, on Friday.
Coach Gordon Myers said
Rietmann's distance was the
same as the sixth place
finisher but his closest com
petitor had fewer misses.
Rietmann was the only
member of the lone High
School track team to compete
at the state level.

had nothing but praise for his
baseball club's win.
"Everybody played just
super," said the lone Coach.
"We had 19 runs. Every
single person came in at least
once," he said.
Kevin McCabe had a phen
omenol game batting in six of
the 19 and hitting two of the
four times he was up at bat.
"It was a really nice way to
end the season. We'll really
miss the seniors next year,
though," Martin said.
Danny McElligott, John
Lindstrom and Kevin McCabe
were vital cogs in the Cardinal
machine. McCabe was the ace
pitcher, McElligott was the
stunning third baseman and
Lindstrom was the super left
fielder.

Ron Bowman was first in

Bigelow hit the long drive of
the day and J. Shaw was

Heppner Mustang Coach Tom

Cindy placed 25th out of 80
competitors in the State Golf
