Braves and Giants
post league wins
The Willow Creek Little
League began its season
Saturday at the County Fair
grounds in Heppner.
In the first game, the
Braves and Angels battled for
five and a half innings before
the Braves came out on top,
1-0. Stan Sporseen started the
bottom half of the sixth with a
single. On the next pitch,
Sporseen stole second, Jason
Mullinau bunted and the throw
to third was wild sending
Sporseen to home plate with
the winning run.
Sporseen collected two of
the Brave's three hits. Kirk
Rothwell was credited with
two of the Angel's three hits.
For the win, pitcher Tom
Hammer struck out 12 Angel
batters. Angel pitcher Kirk
Rothwell struck out ten and
walked none in the losing
effort.
The Giants came from
behind in the second game's
sixth inning to edge the
Dodgers 8-7.

Dave Green started the
bottom of the sixth with a
single, followed by a single by
Tom James. Jeff Ball doubled
driving in the winning run.
Cam George belted a two
run homer in the fifth for the
Dodgers. Jeff Ball was the
winning pitcher striking out
six Dodger batters.
The Willow Creek Little
League gave special thanks to

Four Mustang tracksters will
be heading to the State A
Track Meet at Portland Fri
day and Saturday after quali
fying in the District Meet last
weekend in Umatilla. Qualify
ing were Richard Schmidt,
high jump, long jump, triple
jump, Maureen Healy, 400
meters, high and long jumps,
Jim Parker, shot put and
Bryan Marlin, 400 meter run.
Four qualify for state
The Heppner Mustang track
team placed third overall at
last week's Umatilla District
A meet and qualified four to
the State Meet at Lewis and
Clark College, Portland, Fri
day and Saturday.
Qualifying were junior Jim
Parker, shot put, who threw
his lifetime high of 47'6",
senior Bryan Marlin, 400
meter run, :52.9, senior Rich
ard Schmidt, who qualified in
three events, high jump, long
jump and triple jump, 43'8V2"
and Maureen Healy who
qualified in the 400 meter run,
high jump and long jump.
Maureen was disqualified in
the 200 meter hurdles for not

Mustang baseball squad
The Heppner Mustang base
ball team turned in a slug of
hits in the fourth inning
Saturday to overwhelm Sher
man County, 11-1.
Trailing 2-1, the home team
hit six fourth inning runs.
Mike Stookey started the
Mustang streak with a double
by Doug Holland. Rick Cole
and Dennis Peck collected two
clearing the final hurdle.
Coach Dale Conklin was
pleased with the overall per
formance of the boy's track
team. In the meet final,
Wahtonka placed first, Wes-ton-McEwen
was second and
the Mustangs third out of a 14
team field.
A freshman, Mary Kincaid,
placed third in the high jump,
ran the 800 meter run in 2:40.3
to break a school record but
was not fast enough for the
finals which eliminated run
ners outside of the 2:30's..
Kellie Hammond was fourth in
the discus with her best throw
of 89'2", fourth in the shotput,
32'4 and fifth in the
m 'dm
The
run singles to bring in the
scoring runs.
Peck held the advantage by
striking out 11 batters and be,
Cole and Stookey had two hits
apiece to stabilize the Mus
tang attack. .
The final game of the season
was Tuesday against Wahton
ka which leads the West
Division of the Columbia
Basin Conference. If the
javelin, 97'11" and Dawn
Honnegger was sixth in the
shotput with a throw of 29'6".
The girls were fourth out of a
14 team field with Sherman
County, Pilot Rock and wasco
County leading th pack.
In other results, Marlin was
third in the overall javelin
throw with a distance of 162',
placed fifth in the triple jump
and sixth in the long jump, 20
ft. ; Larry palmer ran the 1,500
meters in 4:30.3 and Dan Nix
was fifth in the 3,000 meters.
Friday and Saturday's State
Meet begins at noon the first
day and 12:30 p.m. the second
and will be the climax of the
Mustang track season.
