Grand Squares hold

The Grand Squares held
their 11th Anniversary Dance
May 5 at the Heppner Legion
Hall.
A great time was had by
everyone with lots of home
made ice cream and a special
Anniversary cake.
Visitors included former
members Jim and Helen
Cochran from La Grande. Jim
and Mary McLean, Redmond,
and Herchel and Betty Mur
dock from Tygh Valley. There
were also visitors from the
Pendleton Rocket Squares,
the Hermiston Square Knots
and a couple from Mount
Vernon.
The dance was called by our
regular caller, Darrel Wilson.

Cont. from page 6
Receipts are expected to
increase dramatically in the
future.
The adjoining map shows
the areas currently in question
and outlines the management
priorities assigned by the
Forest Service in the Heppner
Planning Unit. The current
policy demanded by the
Forest Service stipulates that
the primary concern for many
areas is maintenance of elk
habitat, with timber product
ion as a secondary concern.
Thus, existant in current
policy of the area is an
inherent constraint on timber
sales and production by the
elk herd. This is not a
temporary policy adopted by
the Forest Service, rather, it
serves as a long-range man
date for area management.
Pulic law, both state and
federal, contain numerous
provisions for comprehensive
environmental standards in
multiple use land. Although
multiple use activities do
affect the soil, soil product
ivity is required by law to be
maintained. All activities in
multiple use managed areas
must meet existing State and
Federal water quality stand
ards. Though this existing
mechanism, both elk and
fishery habitat will be main
tained. Multiple use designation
does not mean that the forest
lands in the Heppner Unit will
be clear cut and destroyed.
Present techniques have pro
gressed and matured to state
where areas that are now
designated for multiple use
can effectively produce tim
ber and other resources,
maintain fish and wildlife
. habitat while providing access
to recreation opportunities for
all people.
What people fail to realize is
that much of the scenic timber
lands they look at are already
in full commodity production.
Rather than altering land
form appearance, resource
management produces ameni
ties desired by many of us
including increases in water
supply and certain wildlife
specie.
