Columbia Basin Conference baseball action last week saw the Heppner Mustangs clob ber Sherman County 7-1 on Tuesday, then lose a pitchers' duel to Wahtonka on a road trip to The Dalles on Saturday. In the Sherman County game. Mustang hurler Lionel Wood pitched a three hitter, retiring 11 batters on strikes, while walking none. Wood was also good for a single in the contest. All totaled, Mustang battees tallied nine hits, including Mike Stookey's double and two singles good for three runs batted in. Other Heppner hits included Dennis Peck's two run triple in the fifth inning, a double by Doug Holland, and singles by Scott McEwen, John Murray and Randy Cole. Sherman's lone run came in the second inning. Heppner fielders gave up no errors, compared with three for Sherman County. Traveling to The Dalles on Saturday, Heppner's Dennis Peck paced Wahtonka's ace moundsman Bill Lavelle for four scoreless innings until the Eagles' Jeff O'Gorman un leashed a two run homer in the bottom of the fifth, followed by a two-run double by Pat Ashmore. 7i rr m us tang 4-way The Heppner Mustangs won their final home track meet of the season Tuesday, outdis tancing teams from Pilot Rock, Condon and lone. ' In girls' competition, lone took first, followed by the Fillies, Pilot Rock and Con don. High winds kept times down in nearly all running events, and impeded distances in many of the field events as well. All totaled, the Mustangs racked up 77 points as a team, trailed by Pilot Rock with 60, lone with 27, and Condon with 18. The lady Cards racked up 62 points to the Fillies' 47, while the Rockettes tallied 21 'a and Condon scored 6'2. Richard Schmidt earned triple wins with his 20-5 long jump, 42-ll34 triple jump, and 6-4 high jump. Gribble was also the KP winner. 4 In men's play at Willow Creek this past Saturday, Gene Pierce won first low gross and C.C. Carmichael won second low gross. " John Maas took first low net, with Duane Neiffer Edmundson fires 66 for tourney honors ; Jeff Edmundson fired a 66 to finish medalist at a four-way high school golf tournament at Riverside this past Sunday. As a team, the Mustangs finished second with a score of 307, behind first place Enterprise at 285. Riverside was third at 334, and wheeler fourth with 410. ' The Mustangs' Don Lott scored 78, followed by Mike Lott with 81, Curt Day, 82, and Robert Bier, 90. Earlier in the week, the Heppner golfers traveled to McNary, where the FiJJies Heppner batters threatened to break Lavelle's phenom onal 58 scoreless innings streak at several points, including the first inning, when Lionel Wood and Dale Holland both tagged singles. Mike Stookey showed he was not intimidated by Lavelle's highly impressive record, get ting two hits in three trips to the plate. Lavelle's shutout of the Mustangs on Saturday was his seventh consecutive no-run game. His 58-inning scoreless pitching streak is reported to be the second longest in national high school baseball history. All in all, Lavelle struck out 14 Mustangs and walked none, while allowing four hits. Peck gave up only five hits, striking out six Eagles in the process. The Mustangs com mitted one error, while Wah tonka logged no miscues. "Both teams played ex tremely well," commented Mustang Coach Dale Holland. "We just didn't get the base hits when we needed them." Wahtonka's win gave the Eagles sole possession of first place in the Columbia Basin West, with a 4-1 league record, a game better than the Mustangs. spike final home meet Jeff Lavendar, who has pre viously cleared 6-8, took second to Schmidt in the high jump on misses. 'Dan Nix was a double - winner in distance events, taking the 1,500 meter in 4:32 a personal best, despite the wind six seconds ahead of Larry Palmer, and winning the 3,000 meter run in 10:25.7. Jim Parker also scored double wins, hurling the shot 45-9'2, and flinging the discus 130-5, while taking third in the javelin. The javelin competition was won by Bryan Marlin, another double winner for the Mus tangs, with a throw of 145-10 20 feet better than the second place finisher. Marlin's other victory was in the 400 meter dash, which he clocked in 55.9. Ione's Jerry Rietmann took first in the pole vault, clearing Tee Cup placing second. Harold Kerr won least putts, while Bob Jepson won long drive and Duane Neiffer won KP. Results from the previous weekend's men's play showed John Edmundson taking first low gross, with Gene Pierce placing second. Don Lott won first low net, while Ken Miller and Ted Toll tied for second. Francis Doherty had the least putts. Ron Bowman won the long drive contest and Allen Nistad won KP. beat Riverside 218 to 237. Cindy Kerr led the girls with a nine-hole score of 37. Lottie Laughlin shot a 53, followed by Cindi Berg strom at 67 and Lisa Nix at 71. Heppner boys finished second to Hermiston and ahead of third-place River side. Jeff Edmundson fired an 82 to lead the Mustangs, followed by Don Lott at 88, Mike Lott at 92, and Curt Day at 95. Robert Bier shot a 117, and Darrel Miles shot 137. ; Hi! Cardinal thinclads scoring second place points included Bruce Millman in the javelin, Terry Starr in the shot put and discus, Mike Conklin in the high hurdles and Larry Snyder in the 3,000 meters. Marlin's 19-934 long jump earned second place points for the Mustangs, as did Mike Jones' 12.3 finish in the 100 meters and 25.15 time in the 200 meters. In girls' competition, the Fillies' Maureen Healy scored triple wins in the long jump, high jump and 200 meter low hurdles. But the lone girls tallied seven first place finishes, including double wins by Kim Cofenas in the shot with a mark of 33-1, and in the high hurdles, crossing the line in 17.2. Margaret Doherty was another double winner for lone, taking the 100 meter dash in 13.2 a tenth of a second ahead of teammate Kim Pettyjohn and taking the 400 meters in 71.7 seconds. The Fillies' Kelly Hammond scored a personal best while taking first in the javelin with a throw of 106-8 believed to be the best mark in the district, and logged another 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday Thru Friday 30 OF?
