Competition was fierce
during last weekend's Morrow
County Invitational track
meet at Umatilla.
Seventeen schools sent
teams to take part in the meet.
Good weather, an excellent
track, and great competition
combined to result in some
remarkable times for Class-A
track.
Heppner Coach Dale Con
klin termed the event "the
toughest Class-A track meet
ever held in the state of
Oregon." And he probably
wasn't overstating the case.
Seven of the first place
finishers have the best marks
for their events in the state. A
full dozen first place showings
in the boys' events were good
for meet records, and all but
two first place finishes in the
girls' competition surpassed
previous meet bests.
Heppner boys placed fourth
in team standings, behind
Enterprise, Joseph and
Weston-McEwen. The Fillies
took fifth. On an individual
basis, the Heppner thinclads
showed they are able to
compete with the best.
Mustang weightman Jim
Parker took firsts and broke
personal records in both shot
put and discus. He hurled the

Safi
Ione's Kevin McCabe beats the ball to first base even though Mustang secondbaseman Mike
6 i Stookey makes a valiant effort to get the horsehide there on time. Heppner crushed the Cards 16-6
in the Tuesday afternoon tilt at the Fairgrounds.
Mustangs, Fillies first at 5-way
Umatilla track meet
The Heppner Fillies took
first place in last Tuesday's
five-way track meet at Uma
tilla, despite reports from
unofficial results that showed
the Heppner girls placing
second.
The Fillies racked up 47
points to edge the hosting
Umatilla girls by two, with
Stanfield finishing third with
44 points. lone took fourth,
with Riverside placing fifth in
the girls' standings.
In boys' competition, the
Mustangs tallied 78 points,
well ahead of second-place
Riverside with 50, Umatilla
with 43, lone with 34, and
Stanfield, 26.
Heppner thinclads who
placed high in the meet
included Richard Schmidt,
first in the long jump with a
leap of 19 feet 10 :!j inches. Jim
Parker hurled his way to firsts
in the shot put, at 46-9, and the
discus, 125-3'l. Dan Nix edged
out teammate Larry Palmer
by less than two seconds to
win the 1,500 meter run in
4:38.33, and took top honors in
the 3,000 meter run in 10:07.5
less than a tenth of a second
better than second place
Palmer.
Mustang jumping specialist
Schmidt also won the high
jump, clearing six feet in the
blustery weather, and the
triple jump with a leap of
41-7 just ahead of Jim Park
er and Bryan Marlin.
Buck Estes finished the
intermediate hurdles in 51.1
seconds, good for second
place, and Bryan Marlin's
155-5 javelin throw also earned
second place points.
In girls' competition, the
Fillies' Maureen Healy once
again racked up the points for
Heppner, taking first in the 400
meter run in 1:00.3; first in the
long jump at 16-4, and first in
the high jump at 4-11. Mar
garet Kincaid took second in
the 800 meter run, and Mary
Kincaid was second in the high
jump. The Fillies' Kelley
Hammond finished second in
shot put action, followed in
third place by Dawn Honneg
ger. Hammond also finished
third in the javelin, behind
Ione's Janet McElligott in
second.

meter dash and long jump.
State high jump champion
Maureen Healy continued her
domination of that event
during Saturday's meet,
taking first with a leap of
5-2 three inches higher than
the second place finisher.
Healy also set a meet and
school record in the 200 meter
low hurdles, crossing the line
in 31.8 seconds, nearly two
seconds ahead of the second
place challenger.
Maureen easily could have
been satisfied with the two
wins, but she went on to set
another meet record, taking
first place in the long jump
with a leap of 16-9, and
finishing second in the 400
meter dash, a scant eight;
tenths of a second behind the
