Eva Hamlett
Bob and Cheryle Foskett of
Moraga, Ca. are the proud
parents of a 10 pound 3 ounce
baby girl, who has been
named Janelle Marie. She was
born on April 13 and will join a
brother, Christopher at home.
Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Lun
dell, former lone residents,
are grandparents.
Members of the lone Garden
Club met at the home of Mrs.
Edith Nichoson on Monday
afternoon and did a spring
clean-up on her yard. They
also separated and potted
plants for the Garden Club
plant sale on April 19.
The annual United Church
of Christ clothing drive will be
held the morning of April 26 at
the church. Donations of
clothing may be left in the
basement any time in the next
10 days. Mrs. Bill Rietmann
and Mrs. Pete Cannon are
co-chairman for the event.
Mr. and Mrs. Roy W.
Lindstrom were surprised
with a "Grandpa and Grand
ma" shower for their new
little grandson, Tyler Weiper
of Kelseyville, Ca. at the
Willows Grange Hall on Sun
day afternoon. After the gifts
were opened, refreshments
were served by the hostesses,
Mrs. Cleo Childers and Mrs.
Lewis Halvorsen.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Lundell
of Milwaukie have been visit
ing her sister, Mr. and Mrs.
Clell Rea. Also guests of the
Reas were their daughter,
Mrs. Jim Martin and family of
Hillsboro, who were here for a
brief vacation while Mr.
Martin was away on business.
Easter weekend guests of
Mr. and Mrs. Jim Swanson
were Jim's brothers and
families, John and Kathy
Swanson and three girls of
Redding, Ca.; Dennis and
Joan Swanson and three girls
and their son and daughter-in-law,
Michael and Jackie
Swanson and son Daniel all of
Auburn, Wash. They were
joined on Friday evening by
Jim's sister, Mr. and Mrs.
Kenneth Turner and family;
Jim's mother, Mrs. Irene
Swanson; and Mr. and Mrs.
Matt Greenup, all of Heppner.
Mrs. Vera Rietmann enter
tained her family on Easter
Sunday. Here for the weekend
were Mr. and Mrs. Dean
Rhode and Paul and Mary Jo
of Kennewick. Other guests
were Mr. and Mrs. Bill
Rietmann and three sons, Mr.
and Mrs. Bob Rietmann and
Jerry, and Mrs. Ruby
Roberts.
Visiting at the home of the
Roy W. Lindstroms this week
end were their son, Stephen, of
Hermiston and Nancy Tuor of
Portland.
The lone United Church of
Christ began the celebration
of Easter with a breakfast
served to 88 persons in the
social rooms followed by a
worship service in the church.
Easter music was presented
by the choir, who sang
"Christus Resurrexit" and by
Mrs. David Cheney, who sang
"Because He Lives". The
choir and minister, Dr. Neal
Chobot combined in a choral
and musical reading "Hush
Now". Mrs. Bill Rietmann
was the pianist.

Mrs. Irma Welch and Vera

guest of honor at a birthday
party on Thursday afternoon
at the home of Mrs. Elmer
Palmer.
Pacific Lutheran University
students home for Easter
week were Natalie Tews,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul
Tews and Joel Peterson, son of
Mr. and Mrs. Donald Peter
son. Mr. and Mrs. George New
ton of Portland were weekend
guests of her parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Willard French.
Mrs. Keith Peck and Natalie
and Brian visited with her
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Milton
Morgan, over Easter.

Irving Wallace, "The Pigeon

Large crowd attends
A large crowd of guests and
members of Ruth Locust
Chapter No. 32, O.E.S. attend
ed Friendship Night at the
Masonic Temple on Monday
night.
Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Halvor
sen, worthy matron and
patron presided. Following a
welcome to friends by the
worthy matron, Angela Hal
vorsen of Hermiston, a
grandaughter of the Halvor
sens, performed a dance.
The highlight of the meeting
was the introduction of a
50-year member, Mrs.
Amanda Duvall of Heppner,
who was initiated into the
Order of Eastern Star on Feb.
2, 1929. The Worthy Matron
read a tribute in appreciation
of 50-year members. Mrs.
Wilma Cheney sang "Memor
ies" and Mrs. Kenneth
Smouse played "I'll Always
Be In Love With You" on the
violin in honor of Mrs. Duvall.
They were accompanied on
the piano by Mrs. C.C.

seller "Little House on the
Prairie", one of the best read
books in the library.
For homemakers a new
book is "Pure and Simple" by
Marion Burros, who gives
delicious recipes for additive
free cooking.
Books by famous person
ages in the news recently are
Lauren Becall's "By Myself",
Betty Ford's "The Times of
My Life"; Christina Craw
ford's "Mommy Dearest."
Volumes one and two of
"Robert Kennedy and His
Times" are also available,
plus "Dress Gray" by Lucian
K. Truscott, a novel of West
Point men and boys and the

Nancy Friday is the author
of a new book "My Mother My
Self", which is her search for
identity through a frank and
provacative study of inter
views with about 100 mothers
and daughters to uncover how
we become the women we are.

are 2 to 4 p.m. on Tuesdays
and Fridavs.
Carmichael. Other members,
who have belonged 50 years
this spring but were unable to
attend are Mrs. Kathryn
Feldman Sliuirman of Aptos,
Ca. and Mrs. Hilda Justus
Peterson of Pendleton. Mrs.
Doris Ball, a 56 year member,
and Mrs. Annie Schaffer of
Pendleton, a 57 year member,
were also introduced.
Twenty six past matrons
and patrons were introduced
and honored with a reading by
Mrs. Marilyn Childers. A solo.
"Easter Parade" was sung by
Mrs. Cheney. Each was pre
sented with a gift.
The program closed with
"Danny Boy" a violin solo by
Mrs. Smouse.
In honor of friendship each
person was presented with a
spring bulb.

ored Sunday with a birthday
party at the Lexington I.O.O.F
Hall. The rooms were decor
ated in yellow, green and
white. The birthday cake
decorated by her daughter Pat
was a lovely birthday card
design with Happy 80th Birth
day written and a live golden
rose across the page. Punch
and coffee were served by her
grandaughters, Charlene
Whitney, Valda Smith, Linda
Jones and Pearl Lee Karran.
In charge of the guest card
was Vicky Bowen. Following
the afternoon at which time
Degree of Honor district
convention here Apr. 27
District convention will be
held in Heppner for the
Degree of Honor Protective
Association on April 27. Par
ticipating will be lodges from
John Day, Baker, Pendleton
and Heppner. Luncheon will
be served at the hall at noon
with an afternoon session to
follow. The evening banquet
will be held at West of Willow
with the exemplification of the
Esther Chapter; Irene Stoker
Umatilla Chapter No. 107; and

One of the highlights was the
identifying of old photographs
brought by a cousin from
Cove. These were of Mrs.
McMillans mother and sisters
and their families. Pinochle
was enjoyed later in the
evening with Mrs. Irvin and
Mrs. Bergstrom each winning
with 1500 trump. There were
guests from Irrigon, Pendle
ton, Hermiston, Hood River
and Cove. Hosting the after
noon were her daughters and
families, Mr. and Mrs. George
work following at the hall.
All members are urged

their first-born child, a daugh
ter, Jaqueline Kay. She weigh
ed 8 lbs., 4 oz., and was born

Thursday afternoon. Plans
were discussed for different
money making projects and
the trip to the State Assembly
in Baker. The door prize was
won by Alma Vinson. Refresh

evening of last week.
