Jr. Cards ivin first
two games of season
Stretching it
one run
"I was real pleased with the
way our first game went,"
said lone Baseball Coach
Jerry Martin. Although the
Cards lost to the Riverside
J.V. team by a score of 3-2
Coach Martin said, "The
important thing is that every
body got to play. Everybody
got a chance, and that's what
these non-conference games
are for."
The first score of the game
came when Riverside's pitch
er, McKenzie, belted in a
home run in the second inning
on a dropped ball in center
field. When Ione's Ralph
Morter came up to bat in the
bottom of the second, he base
hit to first base, then stole
second and stole third and was
brought in by Robin LaRue.
Ponnis Stefani was walked
in the bottom of the fifth, stole
a base and was hit in by Gregg
Rietmann to tie the score.
Riverside scored another run
in the top of the fourth inning
to clinch the game.
Kevin McCabe started out
the pitching for the Redbirds
and was relieved in the fifth
inning by Dennis Stefani.
Stefani had an outstanding
game at bat, hitting two out of
three for a .606 and getting a
base on balls.
The downfall for the Card
inal team was centered at
home plate, where McKenzie
struck out 10 players a total of
14 times. There were only two
hits on the Riverside team to
three for the Cardinals.

Ione's junior high baseball
team swept past Riverside
and Arlington in the early
innings of play to coast to
and 6-2 victories during their
opening appearances on the
diamond last week.
During last Monday's sea
son opener against Riverside,
the Junior Cards scored six
runs on seven hits, while
"limiting the Boardman team
to only three runs
Craig Gutierrez was the
winning pitcher, striking out
live Riverside batters while
giving up only two walks. The
lone pitcher also put in an
outstanding day at the plate,
drilling two doubles good for
five runs batted in.
Other lone batters connect
ing for hits were Monny Taylor
with two, and Roger Morter.
Denny Starr and Jeff Key
each tallying one.
Thursday's game against
Arlington followed a similar
pattern. The Junior Cards
unleashed live runs in the first
inning, including two runs
scored on a long Troy Lind
strom single to center field.
Other hitters included Roger
Morter, Donny Taylor and
Craig Gutierrez.

breakaway roping, with a
total time of 10 seconds on two
calves.
Dawn Peterson raced to a
lie for first and second place in
the barrels, followed by Jan
ice Mealy, who placed third in
the finals.
In steer wrestling, Jerry
Gentry placed second in the
first go-around, and Tim Daly
placed fifth, but neither cow
boy placed in the finals.
Winning pitcher for lone
was Denny Starr, who struck
out three and gave up two
walks while allowing only
three Arlington hits. Starr got
some relief help from Gutier
rez in the final inning.
"We've had some good
fielding and not given up
many errors," noted Coach
Bob Deeter. "That's really
helped."
lone will take on Arlington
again this afternoon on the
Cardinals' home turf. Game
time is 1 :30 p.m.
Heading for home
Maureen Healy widens the gap on her leg of the 400 relay for
the Mustang track team at Umatilla last Tuesday. Results of
the meet were not available by press time.
