The women of the United
Church of Christ have finished
the quilt they were working
on.
It is on display in the church
basement. The quilt depicts
familiar scenes around lone
and has been called the
Remberance quilt. Anyone
interested in quilting or learn
ing to quilt is invited to work
on it at anytime. Individuals
or groups wishing to work are
asked to call Katherine Lind
strom or Lucille Rietmann,
and they will see that the heat
is turned on in the basement.
The quilt is to be auctioned off
at the UCC barbeque on June
i2.
Ida Coleman returned last
week from a trip to California,
Arizona and Nevada with Jean
and Pete Crawford of Port

The craft ladies, who fash
ion hand-made items on Thur
sday afternoons at the Neigh
borhood Center in Heppner,
have been working with a very
old idea the last few months.
They have been making
"ojos de Dios" (eyes of God)
decorations. Patterns for
these decorations were found
in Egyptian tombs. The de
signs have been very popular
in Central and South America,
Mexico and in the American
Southwest, and have been
gaining popularity in this area
rather recently.
Each of the unusually at
tractive, four or five colored
yarn designs that the ladies
have made carries a small
typed label stating: May the
eyes of God be on you, and
bring peace, plenty and happi
ness to your household."
The carefully crafted Hep
pner work is priced at between
four and ten dollars, depend
ing on the size. The public is
encouraged to stop at the

birthday will be held at the
Lexington IOOF hall Satur
day, April 14, from 2 to 5 p.m.
Cake, punch and coffee will
be served, and all friends and

of Lexington, and Mrs. A.C.

on sale at very reasonable

A boy was born to Mr. and
Mrs. Wayne E. Rietmann on
March 27 at The Dalles. He
weighed 6 lbs., 14 oz., and has
been named Leonard John,
and joins a brother Eddie.
Grandparents are Mrs. Carrie
Smith of The Dalles and Mr.
and Mrs. David Rietmann of
lone.
Several local residents are
on the ill list. Beecher Emert
was a patient in Pioneer
Memorial Hospital last week,
and Ed Bristow is in the Good
Samaritan Hospital in Port
land. As of now I am planning on
being away for a couple of
weeks. If you have any news
items please take them to the
paper.

Anyone in the market for a

Heppner City Council voted
Monday to put the meters up
for bid, in order to clear space
the no-armed bandits are
taking up in a city hall storage
room. Also to be placed on the
auction block are a wide
assortment of worn city water
meters.

Wranglers will hold their first
playday of the season on
Sunday, April 8.
The playday will start at
noon with a potluck, with the
games scheduled to start at 1
p.m. sharp.

council voted to enter into a
contract with the Portland
engineering firm of Barrett
and Associates, pending the
receipt of a federal grant for a
study of Heppner's sewer
plant problems. Water and
Sewer Committee chairman
Cliff Green said the prospects
appear good that Heppner will

The storytelling workshop
