Extension features sewing
program for April
The spring sunshine has
prompted a rash of activity,'
with events coming thick and
fast for everyone! So. if you
are picking and choosing those
of most interest to you, we
hope you are including the
"Sew Something Special" ex
tension program which will be
presented in both Umatilla
and Morrow counties in early
April.
Two identical programs are
offered, starting at 10::i0 each
day. You may attend April 4 in
Pendleton at Peace Lutheran
Church, or April 5, in Heppner
at the Fairgrounds. If you are
wanting to know what is new
in fashion and fabrics, or learn
more about quick sewing
techniques, here is your op
portunity! Applique, blazers,
down garments, cathedral
quilts, T-shirts for the family,
machine embroidery and an
update on sewing pants, are
all special workshops you
choose which to attend ! There
is something to suit every
interest, so plan now to attend
and learn to "Sew Something
Special."
TOURS
The news is out that
Extension Homemaker's
Council is sponsoring the
annual spring "Gad" day!
This year their plans include
Hood River and nearby
places. Planned for April 24
(but you must register and
pay transportation costs to
save a seat on the bus, by
April 101. the tour will include
an inside look at Jantzen
clothing mills, and the Hood
River distillery during the
morning. Luncheon will be
across the river at Partridge
Inn near Bingen. Then a visit
to Bingen Winery and other
spots of interest in the mall.
Transportation is $12.50.
Lunch on your own at the Inn
will be about $4, but includes
main course, salad, home
made breads, and choices of
homemade pie for dessert. To

maker's Advisory has issued

annual wheat seminar Mon
day. April 2. from 10 a.m. to 3

Topics will include fertili
zing dryland wheat, with
speaker Hugh Gardner, Ex
tension soil specialist: grain
drying, with Walt Matson.
Extension agricultural engi
neer; pesticide registration
and licensing, with Tom
Thompson of the Oregon
Wheat League: pricing of
wheat by grades and market
discounts, with Norm Goetze,
Extension agronomist; and
ideas about wheat manage
ment, with Morrow County
Extension Agent Harold Kerr.

Jan Peterson wins wheat scholarship
Jan Peterson, daughter of
Herb and Barbara Peterson of
lone, has been named winner
of the Oregon Wheat Commis
sion Scholarship for this year.
Jan. an 18-year-old fresh
man ;n Oregon State Univer
sity's home eco"nmics depart
ment, was selected winner by
a committee of extension
agents and volunteer 4-H
leaders. Contestants for the
scholarship must be enrolled
in a 4-H foods project and
must have taken part in
baking contests at the Oregon
State Fair. Applicants must
also have successfully com
pleted one quarter of college.
In accepting her award, Jan
said, "I feel very priveleged to
be the recipient of the Oregon
Wheat Commission scholar
ship. My future plans are to
work for a degree in Home
Economics Extension with
hopes that I may help other
young people like my exten
sion agents in Morrow County
helped me."

Ruth Locust Eastern Star
to hold initiation Friday
The Ruth Locust Chapter of
the Order of Eastern Star will
hold an initiation rite Friday
at 8 p.m. in Heppner Masonic
Hall.
The public is invited to
