Budding scientists in Heppner got a chance to show their skills this week during Heppner
Elementary's Science Fair. Students in grades 5-8 showed imagination as well as technical skill in
designing and demonstrating their creations. More than 130 students exhibited at the fair. In photo
at top left, parents are very much in evidence at the show. In middle left photo, student admires
handiwork of potential Defense Department contractors Shane Laughlin and John Stevens, who
built this tennis ball-firing "Laughlin-Stevens Destroyer." Below the artillery, a student-built
periscope is displayed by youthful party crasher. At bottom left is Jodi Padberg's first-place
winning styrofoam model of the human eye. At top right, students view the workings of a model
steam engine. Below that is Stephanie Payne's model showing the circulatory workings of the
heart. The potato power station at bottom right was quite an undertaking, but a too-large bulb
prevented the spuds' acidic content from lighting up the project creator's light. '
