for 12 years, serving as chief

Rathbun served with Hep

"It feels good to be back,"
said Rathbun, who feels that
Heppner provides "an easier
atmosphere to work in" and
that "the people are friendlier
than in the Valley, and the
weather's nicer."
Rathbun's first major in

FFA Slave
Auction set
for March 8
Slavery has never been
legal in Oregon, but the
Heppner chapter of the Future
Farmers of America will bend
the rules a bit on Thursday,
March 8.
On that date, starting at 7
p.m., between 35 and 40 FFA
boys and girls will, go on the
auction block during the club's
main annual fundraiser, the
FFA Slave Auction.
Buyers don't retain perma
nent rights to the youths'
labors, but they will receive
eight hours worth of work. In
the past. FFA "Slaves" have
performed such tasks as
picking rocks, building fence,
planting trees, pulling rye.
painting, cleaning windows,
and digging gardens. The
terms of the work arrange
ments are to be worked out
between the students and their
"buyers."
The sale will take place in
the Heppner High School
cafetorium.
Funds raised from the sale
will help to cover the expenses
of a variety of FFA projects,
such as sending delegates to
state and national conven
tions, leadership camps, state
fair activities and the club's
annual banquet.
