John Cox advances in First National ranks

Landslide
Last week's thaw triggered a number of mud and rock slides
throughout Morrow County, including this one at the Etta
Parker home on Center Street in Heppner. The slide occured
last Wednesday, sending tons of soaked earth downhill into
Mrs. Parker's garage, smashing out a wall, and partially
covering a car.
Parole, jail sentence among news of
Morrow County Circuit Court
John Cox, a Heppner native
and 1967 graduate of Heppner
High School, was recently
transferred from his position
with First National Bank of
Oregon to a position of
increased responsibility with
thut bank's parent holding
company in California.
Cox, 29, has moved to the
Los Angeles-based Western
Bancorporation where he will
work as a marketing officer
for retail banking services. At

Next Monday, Feb. 19, is the
deadline for public comment
on the proposed land use plan
for the Heppner District of the
Umatilla National Forest.
Copies of the proposed land
use plan are available at the
District Ranger Station in
Heppner. Staff members will
be available to go over the
proposal with interested citi
zens. Written comments post
marked Feb. 19 or earlier will
be considered in evaluating
the plan.
A man convicted for steal
ing saddle tack from a
Hardman area home while on
probation for a misdemeanor
offense will be released on
parole in several mojitbjs?
Morrow County officials
learned this week.
Danny J. Huffman of Joseph
was indicted last May for
stealing the saddle equipment.
Repleaded guilty in Septem
ber, and in November was
sentenced to a three year jail
term in Morrow County Cir
cuit Court. His sentence was to
have been concurrent with a
two-year Wallowa County for
gery sentence.
However, the Oregon State
Parole Board recently recom
mended that Huffman be
released in August of this
year.
Terry Baker, a Sand Hollow
area farm worker, was sent
enced last week to a maxi
mum two-year jail term by
Morrow County Circuit Judge
William Wells.
Barker was found guilty in
the theft last fall of two rifles
from a pickup truck parked in
Heppner. He still faces court
action on an additional drug
charge.
School Board to meet Monday
The names for the new
Irrigon junior high school and
Boardman elementary school
buildings and a countywide
student discipline policy are
among items scheduled to be
discussed next Monday, Feb.
19, during the regular monthly
meeting of the Morrow County
School Board.
A budget hearing will pre
cede the regular order of
business, and an executive
session will be held to consider
teacher contracts.
The meeting will start at
7:30 p.m. in the library of
Heppner Elementary School.
Sweeney
appointed

Maas of Heppner on the board,
whose term expired on Dec.
31. Judge D.O. Nelson said a
number of individuals had
recommended Sweeney for
the appointment over the past
several weeks.
The hospital board will meet
in regular session Tuesday,
Feb. 20 at 7:30 p.m. at the
hospital.
