Cards outgun Umapine,
lose tq red-hot Rangers
The Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon, Thursday January 18, 1979 FIVE
Saturday set for Elks free-throw
tourney in lone and Heppner
Although the lead switched
hands several times during
the game, it was the Cards
that had it and the
momentum when the buzzer
sounded, Friday night when
lone met the Umapine Chiefs.
"We pulled away in the
fourth quarter," said lone
Coach Del LaRue. lone scored
24 of its 74 points in that
decisive fourth quarter. Uma
pine scored only 16 points in
the fourth, ending the Chief's
scoring at 62 points.
The "Dynamic Duo" of
Dennis Stefani, who scored 22
and Kevin McCabe, who
scored 16, led the Cards in a
high-powered offensive attack
against the Chiefs. McCabe
was also the leading rebound
er, pulling down 13 from the
boards. Danny McElligott and
Robin LaRue were close
behind with 10 points each and
LaRue having 10 rebounds.
Gregg Rietmann barely
missed being in double figures
with eight. Shawn LaRue had
four. Mark Patton three and
Glen Krebs one.
"We shot 44 per cent from
the floor," said LaRue, "and
that's better than we've done
before."
"I think a big edge was the
rebounding," the coach
stated. lone grabbed 54
caroms to a scant 33 showing
by the Chiefs.
Jeff Tucholke came through
with 21 points for Umapine.
Saturday night the Cards
traveled to Dufur and seemed
to have left their luck behind.
With a 1:28 left in the
ballgame, the Cards were
behind by one when they
started to foul. A few quick
foul shots and the Cards didn't
have much of a chance. They
fought back but just couldn't
erase the Ranger lead that
had haunted them the full
game.
"It was a good ballgame
anyway," said the coach. "We
could get close," LaRue said,
"but we could never quite get
the lead."
Coach LaRue was the first
on to give Dufur praise, "They
shot real well. It's hard to beat
52 per cent when youre
shooting only 31 per cent."
Several times in the dura
tion of the game the Cards
were behind as many as 11
points. At least four times they
were as close as three and
once as close as one, but as
Coach LaRue said, "we were
playing catch-un "
Dufur had a player that
LaRue termed a good shooter.
Jeff Reed had a total of 22
points to lead his team to
victory. Kerry Fagerberg was
close behind with 12 and was
his team's top rebounder.
For lone the Stefani
McCabe duo scored 14 and 15
respectively. They were fol
lowed by Robin LaRue with 8
and Danny McElligott. Shawn
LaRue and Gregg Rietmann
rounded out the score with 4
a piece.
Friday night the lone JV
boys rolled over Riverside's
young team, 47-18. Coach
Tom Forsythe said of his
team, "We had a lot of
balanced scoring, but we still
fouled a lot."
Mark Patton led his team in
scoring with nine points.
Saturday, the JV team was
overwhelmed by the Dufur
squad 62-37. Forsythe said it
was difficult playing because
"three of my starters fouled
out."
Both teams travel to Halix
on Friday and are at home
Saturday battling Wheeler.
Games start at 4 p.m.

lone girls top Dufur in
low-scoring game
"Even all the way around,"
was the only way lone girls
Coach Martha Doherty could
think of to describe Saturday's
match-up of lone and Dufur.
The only thing that wasn't
even was the scoring, which
showed the lone team coming
out on top, 16-13.
"It wasn't an offensive
show. It was a defensive one,"
she says. "Both teams played
good defense. They only put
the ball up 35 times and we put
it up 38 times.
"All five of my starters did a
real good job of shutting off
their shooters," Coach
Doherty said of her starting
squad of Martha, Michelle and
Janet McElligott, Lori
Edwards and Michelle LaRue.
Both teams seemed to run in
slow motion throughout the
game. Each team had players
out with the flu and several
playing, who were recovering.
The real difference in the
game was that "we forced
them from running their
offense, so they shot all
outside shots." The lone girls
held Durur's "hot-shot" Nikki
Reed to only 8 points, 4 of
those coming in the last 20
seconds of the game, when the
lone players were instructed
not to foul.
lone found balanced scoring
in Michelle McElligott who led
her team with 6, followed by
Janet McElligott and Michelle
LaRue both with 4 and Martha
McElligott who rounded out
the scoring with 2.
Michelle LaRue and Janet
McElligott combined for more
than half of Ione's total
rebounds with 8 and 7,
respectively. Michelle and
Martha helped out Dufur's
turnover situation with three
steals each to their credit.
The lone teams will travel to
Helix Friday, and be at home
Saturday. The games com
mence at 4 p.m., with the
girls' action to start first.
