O Kinzua
news
Barbara Pike
Chuck and Patti Constantin
are the parents of a girl, born
Dec. 29 at the University of
Oregon Hospital in Portland.
The baby, named Nicole Lynn,
weighed 5 lbs. 15M ozs.
Grandparents of the tiny
miss are Raoul and Earlene
Constantin, Portland, and Don
and Barbara Pike, Kinzua.
There are several Great
grandparents and a great,
great-grandmother, Charlotte
Engle, Riverton, Wyoming.
The holiday season has
ended and the handful of
residents here prepare to
move when school ends. All
residents were notified
several weeks ago that the
housing must be vacated by
June 30 of this year. Most
activity has come to a halt due
to the extremely cold weather,
here. The crew that has been
tearing down the mill hasn't
been working since before
Christmas. The skeleton crew
employed by Kinzua Corp. to
maintain town services and
dismantile the buildings has
been very busy in an effort to
keep water, sewer and fire
lines open. Most residents
spent the last few weeks close
to home and fire, enjoying the
beauty and quiet in our snow
covered town.
Nina Castle and her daugh
ter Tara left Dec. 23 for
Bonners Ferry, Idaho to spend
the holidays with Nina's son,
Jay Baker and his family.
They also visited with her
mother Ruth Arther before
returning home Jan. 6.
Lance and Hollie Van Meter
and children, Clay and
Charlotte, arrived Dec. 29 to
visit with his family, Don and
Barbara Pike and family. The
whole family went to Portland
Saturday to catch a glimpse of
the newest family member,
Nicole Lynn, through the
nursery window. They also
were able to visit a few
minutes with the baby's
mother, Patti Constantin, who
was up for the first time after
surgery. The Pikes and Van
Meters returned to Kinzua
that evening after spending
several hours with the proud
father. The Van Meters left for
their home in Parma, Idaho

give birth to the 1979 edition of
the Umatilla County New
Year's Baby.
Mary Ann Munkers of
Irrigon, the first baby to be
born in Umatilla County 21
years ago, gave birth at 1:34
a.m. to eight pound, 5,: ounce
Tiffany Ann Munkers. Mrs.
Munkers, the 1977 queen of the
Morrow County Fair and
Rodeo, is a graduate of
Riverside High School. She is
the daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Rocky Proctor of Irrigon.
Her husband, Barry Mun
kers, is a graduate of Heppner
High School, and also holds a
degree in agribusiness from
Blue Mountain Community
College. The New Year's
father is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Leonard Munkers of
Lexington.
The greatest tuition hike
will come for out-of-state
students who will pay $509 per
term. Truman Baily, regis
trar, reported that this hike
will affect about eight stu
dents currently enrolled at the
college.
Part-time and evening stu
dents will be charged $11 per
credit hour, up $2 from this
year. Credit hour ratings for
non-transfer courses may be
less than for college transfer
classes, keeping class costs
down for the student who just
wants to take a class or two.
In summary, total tuition
costs for one year at BMCC for
the full-time student will be:
in-district $411 (up from $375);
out-of-district $555 (up from
$495); and out-of-state $1,527
(up from $855). These figures
include a $5 fee per term for
student insurance.
In other financial matters,
the board revised bookkeeping
procedures in handling funds
for athletics, activities and
student government. The
revision brings the college
more in line with procedures
used at other colleges. In the
future, student government
funds will be completely
separate from other college
funded programs such as
student newspaper, Rodeo
Club, livestock judging,
drama and athletics.
In a report from President
Daniels, the board heard that
the college has completed
purchase of a 4-wheel-drive
pick-up and snow plow blade.
Daniels also noted that com
munication is continuing with
NORPA on a college housing
project.
