A total solar eclipse will
occur over the Pendleton area
the morning of Feb. 26, and
Blue Mountain Community
College is planning special
activities before and during
the event.
The eclipse may be seen the
morning of Feb. 26 in the
southern skies. At about 7 a.m.
the eclipse will begin and will
reach totality at 8:17 a.m.
Totality will last about two
minutes.

"In most people's lifetimes,
they are lucky to see just one
total solar eclipse," according
to Ellsworth Mayer, former
astronomy instructor and
BMCC dean of academic
planning and research.
"The Astronomical World
and Eclipses" will be explored
in a special evening class to be
offered at BMCC prior to the
eclipse in February.

sessions are planned which
will cover topics such as: a
general introduction to astron
omy, an over-view of the solar
system, how eclipses occur,
and the geometry of eclipses.
Then, on Sunday, Feb. 25,
the day before the eclipse,
groups from out of the area
who have come to view the
eclipse will be presenting their

attend the entire four-class
sequence for one hour of
college credit at a cost of $9.
The class is also open on an
informational basis to people
who cannot attend all events.
There is no cost for dropping
in on a session.
Mayer warns, "Viewers of
the eclipse must be careful to
not do much with the naked
eye."
His warning is echoed by the
national Astronomical League
which states, "Staring at the
sun with unprotected eyes
during the partial stages of the
eclipse can cause blindness or
severe retinal damage."
Safety precautions are
being taken by the college to
help eclipse viewers protect
their eyes. A Questar tele
scope with a solar filter will be
set up so that viewers may
view sunspots and solar
corona during the eclipse.
Indirect viewing of the eclipse
will be accomplished using
projections devices that will
show the eclipse on a screen.

EOSC to hold
classes in
Taiwan
LA GRANDE Students
may study in The Republic of
China for six weeks next
summer though a special
program arranged by Eastern
Oregon State College at Soo
chow University in Taiwan.
Educators and business
persons, as well as college
students and individuals in
terested in or involved with
Chinese culture are encour
aged to participate.
The program runs between
June 21 and August 5 and is
limited to 20 persons on a
first-come, first-served basis.
The deadline for application is
March 15. The cost is $1300,
which covers all expenses,
including round trip air fare
from Pendleton or Portland,
lodging and meals, tuition
expenses, and ground trans
portation for tours.
Twelve college credits may
be earned. Courses of instruc
tion include "Chinese Philos
ophical Thought," "Religions
in China," "Chinese History,"
"Appreciation of Chinese Fine
Art," and "Daily-Use Chinese
Language Practice." In addi
tion, there will be special
lectures, visits to museums, a
Chinese opera, and orchestra
concert, and dancing perfo

The reason the Department
estimates were low in the
period 71-73 was because of
market changes which oc
cured after their estimates
were made. After their esti
mates were made, the market
conditions changed and what
was once waste started to be
hauled out of the woods and
utilized, thus increasing the
amount finally harvested.
The Department noted this
increase in utilization in 1973
and in 1974 and corrected their
estimates. If the auditors had
checked the sales sold by the
state since 1974, they would
have seen that the Depart
ment's estimates were very
close to the amoupt of timber
actually removed.
