"Back in Heppner, the memories linger. On the occasional bumper sticker, construction cap or windbreaker about town you see the legend writ large, 'Heppner 1978, Ping Pong Capital of the World.'" Old-fashioned discipline required that all expressions of appreciation for Christmas gifts needed to be voiced or written before the old year ended. Also individuals and families have long been encouraged to take stock of their living patterns and to resolve to achieve improvement in the new year. While we were living in the parsonage at Lexington, I clipped a most admirable set of resolutions from a Sunday newspaper and scotchtaped it to the kitchen wall. When we moved to Heppner in the spring of 1973 I carefull transferred the item to the inside of my most used kitchen-cabinet door where I can see it often. Here are the lines written by a Walter Scott under the simple heading "Resolutions." No one will ever get out of theis world alive. Resolve therefore in the year ahead to come to maintain a sense of values. Take care of yourself. Good health is everyone's major source of wealth. Without it, happiness is almost impossible. Resolve to be cheerful and helpful. People will repay you in kind. Avoid angry, abrasive people. They are generally vengeful. Avoid Zealots. They are generally humorless. Resolve to listen more and to tajk less. No one ever learns anything by talking. Be chary of giving advice. Wise men don't need it, and fools won't heed it. Resolve to be tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving, and tolerant of the weak and wrong. Sometime in life you will have been all of these. Do not equate money with success. There are many successful moneymakers who are miserable failures as human beings. What counts most about success is howa man achieves it. Resolve to love next year someone you didn't love this year. Love is the most enriching ingredient of life. Dispatcher Betty Launer and Deputy Kip Morris were busy Tuesday ar ranging materials and getting settled in at new quarters for the Morrow County ''Sheriff's Office in the basement of the Courthouse. New offices in the base ment also house the Juvenile Director's office. Entrance to the Sheriff's Office may be gained by using the outside stairs at the rear of the Courthouse.
