Senior Citizen News

Next Monday there will not
be a dinner at Irrigon. In
Heppner on Tuesday, Jan. 2,
there will be spaghetti with
meat sauce, molded vegetable
salad, buttered spinach,
French bread and fruit and
cookies.
At lone and Heppner on
Wednesday, Jan. 3, the menu
offers swiss steak, oven-baked
potatoes, green beans, apple,
carrot and raisin salad, corn
bread and butter and bananna
pudding with topping.
To continue the listing of
nearby Senior Citizen meal
sites welcome visitors at
Prairie City the meal is
Wednesday noon at the
Grange Hall with Lester
Cooley in charge. Tuesday and
Friday at 12 noon, the seniors
of Milton-Freewater gather
for meals in the Methodist
Church under the leadership
of Nancy Pratt.
In Hermiston senior meals
are Tuesday and Thursday
noons in the Civic Recreation
Center Building. Elmo Bloom
directs these meals and the
meal at Umatilla in the
Presbyterian Church at 4:30
p.m. each Friday.
In Stanfield, Jim Stewart is
in charge of the Thursday
noon meal at the Moose
Lodge. At Weston, Warren
Thomas arranges the Tuesday
noon meal at the Senior
Center. In Irrigon the Monday
4:30 p.m. dinner is at the Lions
Club under the leadership of
Opel Cleaver.
Mustang
f rosh win
Heppner High School's
freshman basketball entered
the Christmas vacation break
with a perfect 4-0 record, after
posting wins over Helix Jay
vees and lone C team in net
action last week.
In Saturday's 55-37 win over
Helix, the Mustang frosh
started the game on the right
foot, holding Helix scoreless in
the first quarter, while scoring
17 points themselves. From
that point they continued to
dominate the game, although
Helix managed to outscore
Heppner by a 16-9 margin in
the fourth quarter, when much
of the Mustang secondary was
on the court.
Heppner Coach Dale Hol
land listed Dorian Farrar,
John Murray and Doug Hol
land as Mustang players
giving exceptional perform
ances during the Helix game.
Farrar was good for 12 points
during the contest, including
the sinking of six free throws
in six attempts, and brought
down 12 rebounds. Holland
was 5 for 9 from the field, with
eight rebounds, and Murray
was 4 for 8 from the field,
while bringing down 10 re
bounds. Other Heppner point scorers
included Don Lott with seven;
Pat Parker and Robert Bier
with four each; Jeff Sumner,
three; and Kelly Crews, Cliff
Dougherty and Earl Ham
mond with two each.
Earlier in the week, the
Heppner freshmen hosted
Ione's C squad.
Coach Holland credited his
team's superior rebounding
effort as the main factor in the
Mustangs' 64-45 win, with
Heppner bringing in 74 re
bounds to Ione's 21. Farrar,
Holland, Murray and Ham
mond each had at least 10
rebounds in the course of the
game.
Murray led the Heppner
frosh in scoring with 16 points,
followed by Farrar with 12 and
Holland with 11. Other Hep
pner pointwinners were
Parker with six; Lott and
Dougherty with five each;
Hammond with four; Bier and
Andy Gorman with two each
and Joe Struthers with one.
Ione's Jeff Hams tied
Murray as the game's leading
scorer, sinking 16 points.
Jerry McElliigott was good
for eight points for lone.
No more freshman basket
ball action is scheduled until
after the Christmas' season
break.
The seniors of Pendleton
have meals together each
Monday through Friday at
noon in the Pendleton Senior
Center at 920 S.W. Frazer.
Visitors are welcome to come
to any of the mealsites to
enjoy and support the meals
offered there.
Wool price
supports
announced
Support prices of $1.15 per
pound for 1979 marketings of
shorn wool and $1,943 per
pound for mohair were an
nounced today by Ray Fitz
gerald, administrator of the
U.S. Department of Agricult
ure's Agricultural Stabiliza
tion and Conservation Service.
Pulled wool will continue to
be supported at a level
comparable to the support
price for shorn wool through
payments on unshorn lambs.
As in the past years, shorn
wool payments will be based
on a percentage of each
producers returns from sales.
The percentage will be that
required to raise the national
average price received by all
producers for shorn wool in
1979 up to the support price of
$1.15 a pound. Currently shorn
wool prices are averaging 75
to 80 cents a pound.
