Cards outgunned by North Powder PfTf
By Janet McElligott
The Cardinal hoop squad is
beginning to feel the effects of
their winning football season,
said lone Head Coach Del
LaRue.
"We had to come down from
two weeks ago. Everyone has
been really mentally tough for
so long. We had to be so high
so long," explained LaRue.
The Cards had an all-around
poor night Saturday. Not one
player was "hot." It was a
"total disaster night" for the
Redbirds, LaRue said.
lone varsity fell to North
Powder 80-41. The Badgers
must have been seeking re
venge for the two losses they
suffered to the lone football
team.
"We lacked concentration,"
admitted Coach LaRue. "We
were all really loose, but
nothing fell. " The Cards shot a
29 per cent field goal average
to North Powder's 44 per cent.
"That's a good percentage for
A high school team," LaRue
said.
lone had only one man in
double figures, a far cry from
the 4 men of last week's play.
Kevin McCabe led the scoring
charge for the Cards with 14,
followed by three men with
six, Dennis Stefani, Daniel
McElligott and Gregg Riet-
man. Robin LaRue pegged 4,
while Glen Krebs and Shawn
LaRue added 2 each and
Leslie Thompson brought up
the rear with 1.
The night was not all lost for
the Cards. They out-rebounded
their opponents 34-32.
The lone boys weren't the
only one's that suffered at the
hands of the North Powder
players, as the girls fell 58-22.
"North Powder has a tall,
quick, good ball-handling
club," said lone Coach Martha
Doherty. "We played real
good ball the first quarter and
pretty good ball the second
quarter, but we lost our
sharpness in the third quar
ter," said the lone coach.
"We were out-rebounded,"
said the Coach, "but consider
ing the height disadvantage, I
really think we did a good job
under the boards."
"We went up against one of
the best," said Coach Doherty.
"The whole team did a good
job, it was one of our better
efforts."
The Cards shot a 62.5 per
cent average from the free
throw line, compared with
North Powder's 52.6 per cent.
One of the North Powder girls
had an extremely good night,
as she scored a total of 25
points 23 for her team and 2
for the Cards by mistake.
Michelle McElligott led the
lone scoring attack with seven
points, followed by Martha
McElligott and Anita Palmer
with four each. Janet McElli
gott and Lori Edwards each
had two, and Sandra Thomp
son ended the scoring with one
point.
Last Tuesday, the Cardinal
ettes squeaked by Riverside,
making the team one-and-one
for the week.
"I think that we were well
J'
matched with height and
experience," said Coach
Martha Doherty of the River
side game. "It was a real
rough game, and especially
under the boards.
Although the Pirates went
into the locker room with a
16-13 lead, the Cards soon
erased that with the good
playing in the third and fourth
quarters. The Pirates dropped
the game to the Cards in the
final quarter, as they saw
their lead steadily falling
away. The Cards overcame
the one-sided scoring and
pulled a 24-23 victory out that
night. Karen Harding was the
top scorer of the game as she
led Riverside with 14 points,
Martha McElligott followed
with 7 for the Cards. Diann
Morter scored 4, followed by
Michelle McElligott and Lori
Edwards with 3 each, Anita
Palmer and Shelley Connor,
each with 2, and Michelle
LaRue with 1 for the Cards.
Kathy Farlow had 6 for the
Pirates, and Jyl Hobbs scored
2 and Christy Brandt had 1.
The girl cagers shot poorly
from the gift line, but that's
where they won the game. The
Cards showed poorly with 4 of
14, but the Pirates shot only 1
out of 12. Both teams had the
same number of turnovers,
and the Cards out-rebounded
. their opponents 51-44.
"I'm glad we won," said
Coach Doherty.
Ione's junior high "B" team
held on to a narrow lead in the
closing moments of the fourth
quarter to post a 28-26 win
over Riverside during a road
trip to Boardman last Thurs
day. "It was a close game all the
way just back and forth,"
said lone coach Bob Deeter.
Darrin Padberg was high,
point man for the lone B team,
with 10 points.. Jeff Key was
responsible for six points, and
Steve Millman scored four.
In lone A team junior high
action, the junior Cardinals
lost to Riverside by a 40-26
margin. Riverside maintained
a fairly comfortable 10-point
cushion over lone throughout
most of the contest, according
to Deeter. "But it was still a
pretty good ball game," he
said. "We played pretty well."
Denny Starr topped the
scoring column for the junior
Cards with 12 points, followed
by Roger Morter and Don
Taylor with four points apiece.
Junior high level basketball
action will continue today,
when lone travels to Stanfield.

Heppner High School's
freshman basketball squad
has been victorious in its first
two outings of the season,
scoring a 57-21 win over Helix
and a 53-33 win over lone.
In the opening game of the
year, the Mustang frosh held
Helix to only four points in
each of the first three quar
ters, while scoring 49 points in
the same period of time.
Heppner maintained a 45
per cent shooting success
average, with Robert Bier and
John Murray ending the game
in double figures Bier with 12
and Murray with 11.
Other Heppner point scorers
were Doug Holland and
Dorian Farrar, each with
eight; Don Lott with six; Cliff
Dougherty and Jeff Sumner,
each with three; and Mike
Walsingham, Pat Parker and
Earl Hammons, each with
two.
Holland led the freshman
Mustangs' rebounding effort,
bringing down 14, followed by
Murray with 10 and Farrar
with eight.
In the contest against Ione's
C team, Lott and Holland tied
for Heppner's top scoring
honors, with each player
sinking 13 points. Ione's Ralph
Morter, however, was the
leading scorer of the game,
with 15 points, with teammate
Barney Rea picking up 13.
. While the freshman Mus
tangs shot well, their rebound
ing efforts played an import
ant part in their victory.
Heppner came up with 47
rebounds to Ione's 18. Doug
Holland picked the ball off the
boards 13 times, while Farrar
and Bier each brought down
eight.
The Heppner frosh will meet
Helix at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
