Sifting
the TIMES
The Spanish influenza epidemic, thought to be on the
decline in Morrow County, flared up with a vengeance th
week 60 years ago.
As a result, Heppner City Council ordered all public
meetings canceled to check the spreading of the
disease-which then had a relatively high mortality rate.
The Council had intended to order all church services
closed, at the urging of Dr. N.E. Winnard, city physician, but
Father P.J. O'Rourke convinced the city fathers to allow
regular worship hours to continue.
Willie Whitney, who recently arrived from Ireland to
work at the Hinton Creek ranch of John Kilkenny, died of the
disease during this week in 1918. Kilkenny had also
contracted the flu, and was suffering through its symptoms
with hundreds of other unlucky county residents, including
Sheriff McDuffie and John Sheridan of Heppner; the Parcy
Hughes, W.E. Straight, and Wasco Vincent families of Lena,
and Skinner Creek sheepman Jerm O'Connor.
"Charley Barlow of Heppner met with a little excitement
Sunday afternoon," the Gazette-Times reported 50 years ago
this week, "when his car turned turtle with him. The accident
happened near the grandstand at the rodeo grounds, and the
car went over as Charley attempted to pass another machine
on the highway and was forced onto the soft shoulder. Mr.
Barlow escaped injury."
During the same week in 1928, R.W. Turner of Heppner
was fulfilling a long-time ambition making a tour of the
Holy Land.
Stops on Turner's pilgrimage included New York,
Gibralter, Algiers, Nice, Monte Carlo, Athens, Constanti
nople, Alexandria and Jerusalem. The tour lasted three
months.
Twenty-five years ago this week, Jeff Carter, manager of
the Heppner J.C. Penney Store, was named new president of
the Heppner-Morrow County Chamber of Commerce.
During the same week in 1953, Mrs. Lee Scrivner of
Heppner won $500 in a promotional contest held by the
Portland Oregonian.
Thirty years ago this week, Kinzua's basketball and
volleyball teams had a hard time making the journey home
from a successful road trip to Mount Vernon.
After beating Mount Vernon 48-24 in basketball and 21-25
in volleyball, the teams were heading back along the John
Day Valley when a cloudburst struck.
The highway washed out about five miles from Spray.
Several carloads of Kinzua fans and parents doubled back to
Heppner and returned by way of Rhea Creek and Condon,
finally making it home by 7 a.m. Others simply spent the
night in Spray.
Ten years ago this week, Heppner City Council met in
special session to present retiring Mayor W.C. Rosewall with
an engraved gavel and to give thanks for Rosewall 's 13 years
of service as the city's chief executive.
Rosewall was active in efforts to improve the city's
sewer and water systems, to create a city park, build a new
swimming pool, and build a new fire hall. He was replaced as
mayor by Bill Collins. Current Mayor Jerry Sweeney was a
councilman at the time.
During the same week in 1968, Heppner attorney Herman
Winter was elected a director of the Oregon District
Attorneys Association.
While Winter was in Portland convening with other
officials in the state organization, Orville Cutsforth was
nursing a bruised and swollen jaw received when a falling
tree nicked him while cutting timber at Penland
Prairie soon to become Penland Lake.

Eightmile district.
