oriented functions. Indeed, the times they are a changin'. The
pursuit of the almighty dollar and a change in responsibilities
and priorities are much in evidence, as witnessed and
described by a number of fans in Elgin.
Some people who should have cared couldn't care less.
Congratulations are in order for the Mustangs who made
the Columbia Basin All-Conference team. Heppner players
named on offense were Dennis Peck, Joedy Marlatt, Jim
Parker and Dale Holland.
Listed on the defensive unit were Bryan Marlin, Joedy
Marlatt and Dale Holland.
Second team honors went to Ray Miller on offense, to Jim
Parker on defense, and to Bryan Marlin as a punter.
The exciting part of the news is that two Mustangs were
named first-team both on offense and defense (Joedy Marlatt
and Dale Holland) and one was first-team offense and second
team defense (Jim Parker). Guess what! They are all
juniors and will be back bigger, faster and better next year.
And don't overlook second-team offensive center Ray Miller.
Ray is a sophomore and will be around for two more years. It
is quite an honor for all these young men!
I was dismayed to see that Bryan Marlin was not listed
somewhere in the running back picks. I don't know if the
league has MVP selections, but I would cast my vote for
Bryan Marlin. Bryan was a consistant runner all season. His
driving, twisting, get-every-available-yard runs were the
rule rather than the exception. Bryan is also an excellent
blocker, who many times sprung Dennis Peck on his patented
sprints to the goal line.
Bryan was listed a first-team, all-league defensive back,
which is understandable. Bryan ended the year with
numerous interceptions and he let the opposition know he
was around with his crisp, hard tackles. And don't forget, he
was named second-team punter.
Put all of that together with the fact that he was
co-captain and one of the team leaders and what do you get?
A solid vote for an imaginary MVP.
