4-H RECRUITMENT STILL
UNDERWAY
If your youngsters have
been wanting to learn about
4-H opportunities, they will
hear all about it at schools in
both lone and Heppner next
week. John and Birdine will be
taking their 4-H story to the
students, and offering them
the opportunity to choose from
a wide number of projects
available in the county. Any
parent wishing to hear the
presentation would be wel
come to attend an assembly at
Heppner Elementary on Nov.
15, 10:30 a.m. or at lone
Elementary Nov. 21, 9:30 a.m.
Any boy or girl indicating
interest at that time will be
contacted immediately follow
ing with information on a club
to meet their interest.

Oregon was migrating over to
the east side for elk season. It
also reminded me that Exten
sion has many recipes and
bulletins on hand which offer a
variety of ways to utilize the
game. Ask for a copy of
"Game Foods" "Treats with
Sausage" by Gus Margraf,
Baker County Extension
Agent. This bulletin offers
many recipes and hints on
using game foods in ways that
Gus tested and approved. All
Extension. bulletins are avail
able free.
NEW ASSISTANT
DIRECTOR FOR HOME
ECONOMICS
Pat Coolican has recently
joined the OSU Extension
Service as Assistant Director
of Home Economics. Before
coming to Oregon, she served
as Director of the Extension
family living program in West
Virginia. She had previously
spent ninteen years as a
county extension agent in
Virginia, as well as three
years as an Extension special
ist at Cornell University. She
replaces Ann Litchfield with
the OSU Extension staff. We'll
look forward to seeing her in
our county as she travels
around getting better aquaint
ed with needs of Oregonians.
WOOL STYLE SHOW
Remember the Make It
Yourself with Wool District
Contest will be held in
Heppner again this year. Girls
from several Eastern Oregon
counties will be competing
Nov. 18 at the Catholic Parish
Hall to represent this district
at the state contest.
Many of our 4-H girls
participate in the contest,
which offers lovely prizes
locally, as well as state and
national awards. A full day is
in store for those participat
ing, including a no-host
Juncheon for the girls at the
Parish Hall. Carlene West
serves with Dorris Doherty as
codirectors of the contest,
which is sponsored by the
Wool Growers Auxiliary,
We like to see a good
audience when the girls model
their lovely woolen garments
for the public. The style show
immediately following the
luncheon is open to all
interested.
"THE ARTIFACTORY"
Do you have Dec. 2 circled
as a red letter day? That's the
date of the local arts and
crafts show-sale called "The
Artifactory." Local artists
and crafts people offer their
hand made products for sale
as well as exhibit. It is a
chance to see what the very
creative people in our county
are doing, as well as a time to
pick up one of a kind items for
gift giving. The artifactory is
sponsored by the local AAUW,
and is a very real community
project.
For those wishing more
information on exhibiting or
selling, the co-chairmen of the
event this year are Monica
Swanson and Pat Edmundson.
There will be demonstra
tions again this year, so watch
for more information as the
date draws near.
