Face Arlington Friday
Cards flood Cascade Locks 60-26
By Janet McElligott
The lone football team was
ready to roll Friday night
against Cascade Locks, and
roll it did right over the top
of them.
Within one minute and 12
seconds the Cardinal offense
had racked up 16 points, which
was pretty fast considering
the Cards had kicked off to the
visitors at the start of the
game. On the opening kickoff
the Pirates fumbled and
Shawn La Rue was soon upon
the pigskin. Gregg Rietmann
scored on a 15 yard run, the
first Cardinal play. Dennis
Stefani passed to Robin LaRue
for two. The Cards kicked off
again, only to see the Pirates
lose the ball again, as Kevin
McCabe caught it and ran 31
yards to score. Stefani con
nected with Dan McElligott
for two more.
"I knew that we'd score
quickly," said- lone Coach
Gordon Meyers, "but not that
fast. When our first team unit
was in there, they really
handled themselves well,"
said the Coach with pride.
The Cards continued to
score in their Homecoming
victory, amassing 37 first
quarter points in a season
record breaking spree.
Stefani passed 29 yards to
Robin LaRue to add six,
a followed by a 16 yard run by
Gregg Rietmann, with Mc
Cabe adding two more on the
ground. McCabe followed once
more with a 5 yard TD run
with Stefani booting the ball
for the conversion.
The Cards were leading 37-0
at the start of the second
quarter when a Pirate player
exploded for 64 yards and TD.
Soon afterward, the Pirates
connected on a 14 yard pass
and ran in the extra points.
Robin LaRue returned the
threat with a 42 yard touch
down run. Halftime saw the
Cardinals leading 43-14.
Undaunted by the cold night
air, the Cardinal players burst
out of the locker room to score
on a 41 yard McCabe run
early in the second half.
Stefani added the extra point.
Deep in the third period,
Stefani then retrieved a punt
and dashed 55 yards to score.
The lone quarterback then
added the PAT for a 57-14
score. The Pirates then cash
ed in on two more touchdowns
for their final 26 points while
the "golden toed" Stefani
booted the pigskin through the
standards from 27 yards out to
end the Card scoring spree at
60.
"I do wish we'd had a
tougher game," admitted
Meyers. "You always want a
tough game before you go
against the league's defending
champions. In all fairness to
Cascade Locks, they had a
couple kids out ."
The Cards will end regular
season play against Arlington,
thereat 1:30p.m. Friday. lone
is 8-0 going into its last regular
season game as are the
Honkers. The game will de
cide the league championship.

Highlighting Homecoming
1978 for Arietta Aldrich were
halftime activities when the
lone High School senior was
crowned Queen.
The daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Cliff Aldrich, Arietta is
active in school functions
including being editor of the
yearbook.
Serving on the Homecoming
Court with Queen Arietta were
senior princess Janet McEl
ligot, junior princess Lori
Edwrds, sophomore princess
Tina Lindstrom and freshman
princess Margaret Doherty.
The halftime festivities cap
ped a week -long agenda that
included Kids Day on Monday,
"Outer Space" Day on Tues
day, freshman workday on
Wednesday, movie star day on .
Thursday and powderpuff
football on Friday.
The powderpuff football
game was won by the junior
senior team, 6-0 over the
frosh-sophomore squad. Dan
ny McElligot and Terry Starr
coached the winners while
Gregg Rietmann, Tim Key
and Barney Rea gave the
game's finer points to the
losing team.
The 8-minute quarters gave
little time-for endless maneu
vers but a load of talent
unveiled for spectators, such
as a punter who consistently
missed the ball on the up
swing, kickers who couldn't
boot the ball the required 10
yards and quarterbacks with
100 per cent averages on
incompletions. The winning
touchdown was made by
Martha McElligot who dashed
across .the line for six.

Jill Robertson of Heppner is
one of the top 10 cowgirls
competing in the State
Championship Rodeo being
held at Grants Pass on Friday,
Saturday and Sunday.
This is the first year that an
Oregon Championship has
been up for grabs. The Oregon
Rodeo Association formed
earlier this year and associa
ted with rodeo events up and
down the state. Points for each
event of these associated
rodeos were kept to determine
the top ten cowboys and
cowgirls in each event.
The participants will per
form each day of the Rodeo
and try to accumulate as
many points as possible. Jill
will have the opportunity to
accumulate three scores to try
and gain the title of the event.
With $6,000 in added money,
the payday for successful
participants should be rather
good.
