Pavement damage
The use of studded tires on
Oregon's highways for the
coming winter season will be
allowed starting Nov. 1, H.
Scott Coulter, state highway
engineer announced this
week.
Under state law, studded
tires are permitted on Oreg
on's highways during the
period November 1 through
April 30 of the following year.
Coulter asked that users, defer
putting the studded tires on
their cars until they are
necessary, because of the
damage they cause to bare
pavements.
Coulter said the effect of
studded tires on pavement
markings result in extreme
damage, and occurs at a time

business school
Kathy Marshall, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Marsh
all of Heppner, graduated
from Link's School of Business
in Boise, Idaho, on September
29.
Ms. Marshall graduated in
the Automation Secretarial
course.

Joseph James, junior, is
next. He is head credit
manager for the large
Southland Produce Co. of
Los Angeles. He has never
married.
The third of their child
ren, Thomas John, now
teaches in the Wheeler
County High School at
Fossil. He graduated with ,;
athletic honors from Hep
pner High and Linfield
College, taught here for 13
years and has worked in
the woods and in the mill.
His wife Joan, Newberg, is
the office manager of the
Evergreen Helicopter Co.
They have three sons, a
daughter, and eight grand
children. The fourth Joe Hughes
child, Mary 5live, died at
Fairview School in 1975.
The youngest is William
Bassett Hughes who was
graduated from .Pacific
University after complet
ing all his public schooling
here. He was an outstand
ing football player. Bill is
now in his 13th year of
teaching P.E. and Health
at Sutherlin High School.
He and his wife have three
children in the Roseburg
Schools. Mrs. Hughes, an
R.N., is head of the
Intensive Care sector of
the Veterans Hospital
there
The lively fourth genera
tion of Olive's family
includes Ellen Anita's
three grandchildren and
Tom's eight grandchild
ren, making Olive the
grandmother of eleven and
the great-grandmother of
eleven.
Olive became a member
of the Christian Church
here in 1921 (only Marvel
Jones is an older, active
member.) She is also a
charter member of the
Heppner Club of Soroptim
ist International. She
became a member of
Eastern Star when she was
18 and transferred to Ruth
Chapter no. 32 here in 1923.
During the second World
War Olive worked as clerk
to the War Ration Board
here. In 1944 she began
working as deputy assess
or at the courthouse and
served as assessor for
several years before she .
left the courthouse in 1959.
Olive substituted in the
schools of the county from
the early 1920's until rather
recently when not other
wise employed.
