Heppner woman proud of Irish history here

Olive Bassett Hughes
has a long and interesting
association with the Hepp
ner area of Morrow County
where her husband's Irish
family were early homest
eaders. She. is so lively, with
snow-white curls, with
steady brown eyes and
with such a variety of
interests. She often walks
into downtown Heppner
from her home out on the
Condon Highway. She is
very proud of her ances
tors and of her
descendants. She is still
eager to learn new things.
Olive, born in Winters,
California, on Feb. 1, 1895,
is the second child of Glenn
Otis Bassett and Olive
Davis Bassett, who reared
nine children. Their seven
daughters are still living,
but their two sons are
gone. Five of Olive's sis
ters live in California and
the sixth sister lives in
Portland. She speaks with
pride of their brothers,
Raymond Harris Bassett
who was a lawyer in Salem
and Glenn Willard Bassett
a vocal teacher and Presi
dent of the tos Angeles
Conservatory of Music,
It was fun to visit with
Olive about her family,
some of whom I got
aquainted with before I
met her. We visited in her
simply furnished farmhouse-type
home surrounded
3y a huge collection of
Hughes pictures and not
far from her big, old
Majestic wood stove. I
have been enjoying attend
ing the Senior Citizen
dinners' where Olive also
comes on the Tuesdays and
Wednesdays that she is in
Heppner and also the six
hours of CPR training that
we took. Olive, probably
the oldest in that CPR
class at 84, took a very
active part in the exercises
and discussions.
Olive really came to
Oregon in a covered wag
on. Her parents brought
their family from Dixon,
California to Creswell,
Oregon in 1899 in a covered
wagon her father built on
top of a dray he owned. It
had all the essentials for
housekeeping, a stove and
a row of beds, etc., and the
familv lived in it as tfiev
traveled porthward.ej?
left Dixon on July 4 and
ended their journey at
Creswell on Aug, 28, 1899.
At that time the Bassett,
family included the pare'
nts and their first three
daughters.
Olive speaks with pride
of her parents and grand
parents. Her paternal
grandparents crossed the
plains from Iowa in 1865 to
California. Her father was
born when they reached
Thurston, Oregon. His mo
ther died when he was
three months old, and he
was reared by his mother's
closest friend, Zerilda
Jane Clemens Sparks at
Sjjtferton. Auntie Sparks,
as ..the children called her,
was Mark Twain's first
cousin: "1
Olive's mother's oeoDle.
" the Da vises; were from
Pennsylvania. Her grand
father Davis went off to the
Civil War as a drummer
boy and rose to be captain
in the Union forces. He was
given a homestead in
California as a reward for
his war services. There he
brought his wife and their
two small daughters to
live.
Olive knows Oregon
well. She started grade
school in Creswell, but
when she was in the 8th
grade the family moved to
Corvallis where she went
through the first two years
of high school. Then the
Bassetts moved to New
berg where Olive finished
high school in 1913.
She entered O.A.C. that
fall as a Home Economics
major. The first year she
taught her father died, and
