Mustangs suffer first loss of season at hands of Weston-McEwen
Heppner High School's un
tarnished win record went up
in smoke in Athena last
Friday, when the Mustangs
suffered a 13-6 defeat in
overtime at the hands of the
Weston-McEwen Tiger-Scots.
The loss brings Heppner into
a five-way tie for first place in
the Columbia Basin Confer
ence. Good defensive play pre
dominated during the first
half of the game, with both
teams held scoreless until late
in the third quarter. A Bryan
Marlin punt was fielded by
Weston-McEwen's Jim Rice,
who ran the kick back for 39
yards. Rice's impressive re
turn set up a short-yardage
sprint to paydirt by Tiger-Scot
fullback Jeff Mitchell. The
Mustang defensive line block
ed the point-after kick attempt.

lone Junior High met defeat
at the hands of Riverside last
week, during a hard-hitting
contest that left the Boardman
school the winner by a 24-8
margin.
lone held Riverside to eight
points in the first half, before
the junior Pirates unleashed a
16-point scoring spree.
The fledgling Cardinals sco
red on a 45-yard pass play
from substitute quarterback
Craig Gutierrez to Donnie
Taylor. Gutierrez sneaked in
for the two conversion points.
Regular quarterback Denny
Starr was sidelined with
minor injuries during the
fourth quarter.
lone coach Jerry Martin
praised Gutierrez and Taylor
for the defensive as well as
offensive performances dur
ing the game. "They not only
scored, but they hit and
tackled well, too," said Mar
tin, noting that Taylor was
also credited with a pass
interception during the con
test. Despite the score, lone
"Played a good football game,
overall," the coach comment

gridders at lone this, afternoon.
Heppner came back near
the midpoint of the final
quarter, marching 60 yards
down the field before Bryan
Marlin leaped over the goal
line from one yard out.
But the Mustangs failed to
ice the cake, when a Doug
Holland conversion kick fell
short of the uprights. Heppner
threatened again, as the clock
ticked down, when they drove
to within the 10-yard line after
recovering a Tiger-Scot fum
ble. But a penalty and an
interception thwarted the
drive and the game moved
into overtime.
Weston-McEwen 's Ken Dev
ereaux connected with receiv
er Jim Rice from five yards
out to put the Tiger-Scots
ahead in the overtime period.
Jeff Mitchell booted a conver
sion point, making it 13-6.
Heppner had another shot at
tieing the score, but fumbled
within the five yard line to
allow Weston-McEwen to run
down the clock.
"Lots of little mistakes
penalties, missed assignments
added up to big problems
and cost us the game,"
commented Heppner Head
Coach John Sporseen. "Our
defensive game was really
quite good. There's not one kid
who did a poor job defensively
...although our punt coverage
was not good on their 39-yard '
runback that set up their
touchdown."
They just didn't make the
mistakes that we did," Spor
seen continued, adding that
"we need to work some more
on our offense."
Statistically, Heppner's off
ense did not look that bad. The
Mustangs tallied nine first
downs, compared with seven
for Weston-McEwen. Heppner
picked up 211 total yards on
offense to 173 for the Tiger
Scots' The Mustangs racked ,
up 161 yards in rushing versus
94 for the Athena team, with
Marlin credited with 77 of
those yards and Dennis Peck
running for 74.
Weston-McEwen edged the
Mustangs in the passing
department, with Devereaux
connecting on 10 of 17 throw
ing attempts for 79 yards.
Heppner quarterback John
Bier was successful on three
of nine attempts, good for 50
yards.
Each team gave up a
fumble, but Heppner lost a
total of 70 yards on penalties,
compared with only five yards
surrendered by the Tiger
Scots for infractions.
Heppner will have its hands
full again this Friday, when
the Mustangs will host de
fending Columbia Basin Con
ference Champion Sherman
County. The powerful Sher
man team also stands 3-1 for
the season, after bumping off
Riverside 7-0 on Friday.
Kickoff time will be 8 p.m.
