Three-and-one, and just another face in the crowd.
Number 1 It is too bad the Mustang offensive line didn't
show up for the game until the fourth quarter. Number 2 It
is too bad we missed the extra point. Number 3 It is too bad
we fumbled the ball during the Kansas Plan tiebreaker.
It is difficult to pin down the reason for losing a football
game. It is hardly ever one single play, so we can rule out
numbers two and three. Item number one tells the story.
As a matter of fact, but for a couple exceptions, the
Mustang bench didn't seem aware there was a game going
until the fourth quarter. The Mustang offense wasted three
quarters of the football game, which put the spotlight on the
missed kick and fumble. A. similar performance against
Sherman County, and the Mustangs can just about kiss the
CBC championship good-bye.
Now for the good news. The Mustang defense played
their usual tough ball game, keeping the game in reach
against a quick, enthused Tiger-Scot team.
Dale Holland played a very steady game, reminding me
a little of a young Ted Hendricks. What do they call
Hendricks? A "mad" something. I believe it fits in the zoo.
Steve Marlatt is becoming a force to be reckoned with.
Steve is hitting harder and pursuing better each week. I
wonder what goes on when he and brother Joedy have a
dispute? I bet a good promoter could sell tickets for ringside
seats. (Do you suppose a popcorn vendor could make any
money? Maybe a band-aid concession would be better.)
Another player is starting to emerge in the defensive
backfield. Lionel Wood intercepted another pass Friday
night, making it one each game. Lionel doesn't stand out so
much for hard hitting as he does for consistantly being in the
right place at the right time.
The fans get an A- this week. What an effort! Fighting
and braving the onslaught of deer hunting traffic to drive to
Athena. It is good to see that a number of Heppner sideliners
who made the trip are not parents of players. When these
people make a trip like that, it means they are
dyed-in-the-wool fans. (This doesn't mean the parents aren't
true fans, but they do have a special interest.)
The traveling fans are an enthusiastic lot, and vocal. Too
bad it doesn't rub off on the home crowd.
The lone Cardinals continue their winning ways by
downing Mount Vernon 40-8. I bet that after the last two
games, the "stat" people have had to start working out with
the team. In the last two games the "Run and Gun Cards"
have scored 92 points. That means a lot of running up and
down the sidelines for the statisticians. They probably never
thought they would have to get in shape just to keep records.
