Coach Brock was especially
happy with the Pilot Rock tilt
during Saturday's tourney in
which both teams played
excellent ball. "They were
tough and wanted the win, but
we were tough and wanted the
win more," said the Coach,
adding, "We played good
team ball. . .had communica

Heppner put two points on
the scoreboard during the first
quarter, when Mustang def
enders tackled Pirate back
Gary Gordanier in the end
zone. During other first quar
ter action, a long-yardage
Heppner pass play resulted in
a touchdown only to be
called back due to a Mustang
clip.
Riverside's Gordanier came
back in the third quarter,
romping 72 yards for a
Bodrdman touchdown. The
. hard-hitting Heppner defen
sive lineup held Riverside
scoreless for the remainder of
the game, and forced a second
safety in the final three
minutes of the contest, by
tackling a Pirate punter in the
end zone.
The Mustangs then returned
Riverside's free kick to its
own 40 yard line, and began a
march towards paydirt as the
clock ticked down. At the
15-yard line, with 70 seconds
remaining, Mustang back
Dennis Peck sprinted 15 yards
to put Heppner ahead for
keeps. A conversion pass from
Marlin to Zita ended the
scoring.
Peck outrushed all other
backs in the contest, logging a
total of 122 yards on the
ground in 18 carries. River
side's Gordanier racked up 113
yards in 11 carries, with
Heppner's Bryan Marlin rush
ing for 77 yards.

with Heppner picking up 35
yards in the air, and Board
man totaling 49.
Heppner lost 90 yards to
penalties during the contest.
Senior linebacker Jim Par
ker led Heppner's defensive
unit in head coach John
Sporseen's complex defensive
point scoring system, followed
closely by Sophomore center
Ray Miller and Dale Holland.
Both Parker and Miller de
monstrated that they had no
aversion hitting, and hitting
hard.
Another tough contest
should be in store for Heppner
on Friday when the Mustangs
face 2-1 Weston-McEwen.
Heppner's win over River
side kept the Mustangs in first
place in Columbia Basin
standings, with 3-0 record.

GRADES: Coaches, B-. Team, (physical effort. A, mental

3 wins 0 losses and all alone
How's your heart? I thought the kids in lone were hard on
the fans. What did they do? Only blasted Long Creek in a
52-22 version of your basic rout. The Heppner Mustangs on
the other hand, decided to put a little tension on the home
town fans. After the easy going, low-key contest at Stanfield,
Friday night's effort was real ulcer material.
The Mustang defense played an outstanding game, by far
the hardest hitting effort of the young season. The important
thing about the fierce defensive attack is that it was a total
team effort, every man intent on stopping the Riverside
charge. The heavy hitters this week were the whole defensive
team. Nice job.
I waited to see if there was a Bull and a Bear on the field. It
didn't take long because Ray Miller can't wait to knock
someone down, and Jim Parker is only a step behind him. I
believe that by the time Ray is a Senior there may be a rule
against him. Football is a contact sport and with Ray it is the
reason for playing. Talk about your energy release, Jim
Parker also plays the game tough. He is big enough to do it.
Jim has gotten better each week, hitting harder and being
more involved in the game.
I heard a rumor around town that Coach Sporseen doesn't
feed the defense the last two days before a game. Then at
game time he shows the opposition to the big "D" and says
"meat"! I don't know, but it could explain the aggresive
play.
You know, along with a bear and a bull, I see a wolverine,
(fierce, fast, sleek), a fox, (quick, sly, smooth1, and a
baracuda, (fast, sleek, hungry ). Why, I think at the opening
kickoff, 11 normal kids turn into a zoo whose characteristics
exemplify aggressive, tenacious, determined and spirited
play.
The crowds grade came up this week. The fans are getting
the message and becoming more involved in helping the
team with their enthusiastic support. There is still some
room in the grandstand. (Not much, though). No A's until
SRO.
I should explain my C- grade for mental preparedness
When the team travels to an away game the team is together
and thinking football from the time they leave the high school
until game time. This gives the team time to think about what
they want to do and how they are going to do it. When the
team plays at home there seems to be little time to prepare
mentally for playing the game. After school Friday some
members of the Mustang team seemed to have their minds
on every thing but football and it was evident during the
game. The boys played hard, and couldn't have given the
fans a more exciting game. However, the team made some
mistakes that a mentally prepared team should not maiie
Especially a 3-0 team that is leading the league, t'uouh af
the soap-box. I much prefer to write in a lighter vein.
As mentioned, the lone Cardnials traveled to Long Creek
Friday afternoon and it was show time for the Big Red. The
end tally was 52-22. Everybody on the team saw ample
playing time and got in on the fun. By the way, the lone
Cardinals are also 3-0 and are on the way. I am sure that
Coach Meyers has the team taking one game at a time. But I
bet there is a little looking forward to the last league game in
north Gilliam county. (I think I have a service call in
Arlington that afternoon).
The H.H.S. Fillies faltered a little against Condon but came
roaring back to dominate their Invitational Tournament . The
girls steamrolled Ukiah and Weston McEwen. then slipped
by Pilot Rock in the class match of the tourney.
T am not sure of the signifance of total scores, but the
Fillies scored a total of 108 points while only giving up fit.
Sounds like a potent offense and a stingy defense. I don't
know if the footballers are following the volley bailers or the
other way around, but its working and winning.
