Fishermen 's wives to give seafood tips to local drylanders
The 'Fishermen's Wives"
from Astoria are coming to
town, bringing demonstra
tions and information on
seafood cookery. This special
program is dated for Sept. 27,
2 p.m. at the Annex, Fair
grounds, Heppner.
Most "drylanders" love sea
foods, but most do not know as
much as they would like about
preparation of the delicious
foods, or the wide variety
available. The program is
open to all, at no charge, so be
sure you do not miss this once
in a lifetime opportunity to
learn all about the fishing
industry, plus many other
informative ideas from those
who are actively involved with
the fishing business.
The "Fishermen's Wives"
is a group, similar to our
Cowbelles, or Wheathearts,
and we feel fortunate that they
will come to eastern Oregon to
share their expertise. Inciden
tally, we learned about the
group and their interest in
promoting their industry
through Virginia Whitaker,
Heppner. She attended a
conference with husband Hal,
local FFA Instructor, and met
the women and sampled their
wares bringing home the
message that they were avail
able to come out and do
programs on seafood.
You'll enjoy taking home
their recipes, as well as
sampling their goodies!

BMCC staff
preparesfor
term opening
Pre-service activities began
Sept. 11 for faculty and staff at
Blue Mountain Community
College.
The two-week calendar in
cludes programs whose aim is
orienting new and returning
staff members to the college.
There are 14 new faculty
members this year at the
college and six new support
staff people.
Jim Whitney, BMCC board
chairman, told the assembled
group at its first meeting,
"We're anticipating a better
year ahead. Crisis pulls people
together." Looking to the
future, he noted the board's
dedication to "community
visibility and credibility" this
year.
Ron Daniels, BMCC presi
dent recounted to the college
staff the problems of getting
the budget passed early last
summer. He assured the
faculty that "the quality of
instruction was never ques
tioned during the entire elec
tion." Daniels identified the pro
perty tax revolt as an area of
primary concerns this year to
the college. He outlined the
uncertainty caused by ballot
measure no. 6 and the new
alternative measure no. 11. He
commented that it will be
difficult for the college to
know how to build its budget
until the measures are clearly
explained. .
Other items on the staff's
two-week schedule include:
Group meetings on staff-administration-institutional
relationships. 1
An address by Dr. Dwight
Baird, of Crawford, Baird and
Smith Corp., on his firms
recommendations for better
utiliaztion of college facilities.
