For the third consecutive
year, Kinzua softball team
will be playing in the State
Recreational Tournament in
Eugene the last weekend in
August.
Kinzua knocked off Sky
High of Hermiston and the
East Oregonian in the district
tournament to advance on to
the state tourney. Prowler of
Pendleton and the Hermiston
Herald also will represent
eastern Oregon. District play
offs were held in Hermiston
this past Saturday, despite
showers.
In the first game, Kinzua
plagued with errors and poor
hitting suffered its first loss
to Chubs, 4-3.
Chubs jumped to an early
lead in the first by scoring
three runs on a fielding error.
Kinzua couldn't get any
thing going till the fifth inning
when a double by Jamie Sands
scored Gary Kemp and Buck
Query.
Kinzua added another run in
the seventh, as Delbert Bin
schus' single crossed the plate
on Keith Curnutt's sacrifice
fly. However, Chubs came
back and scored the winning
run to capture the victory.
Gary Kemp and Jamie
Sands both had three hits
apiece with Keith Curnutt
adding two to lead Kinzua in
batting.
After trailing for five inn
ings, Kinzua scored in the
sixth to edge Sky High 3-2 in
the second game.
Sky High scored in the first
and second to lead Kinzua 2-0.
Kinzua got its first run in the
fifth, when Dave Eckman
scored on Delbert Binschus'
single.
Jamie Query and Keith
Curnutt followed in the sixth
with singles, and John Mc
Cabe's double scored them
both to hand Sky High a
defeat.
Mike Rowell and Gary
Kemp hit safely for Kinzua but
failed to score.
Despite rain, the third game
was played with both teams
going nine complete innings
before Kinzua edged East
Oregonian 7-6.
Kinzua jumped to an early
lead and held its opponents
scoreless until the sixth.

single by Buck Query score a
run on a single by Jamie
Sands.

fourth, when Dave Eckman
singled to bring in Buck
Query.

Kinzua allowed East Oregon
ian five runs while they scored
only one on John McCabe's
single.
Kinzua fought back in the
seventh when Jamie Query
added another run on a single
by John McCabe.
Correction
Farrell Grigg's name was
misspelled in a story listing
winners at the Pendleton
district swimming meet, car
ried in the Gazette-Times last
week. Griggs finished second
in the 11-12 boys' freestyle,
and fifth in the 11-12 boys'
backstroke.
The final run for East
Oregonian came in the eighth
but Kinzua captured the win in
the ninth, when John McCabe
drove in Jamie Sands.
Other Kinzua batters who
hit safely were George Water
land and Delbert Binschus.
In the game that followed,
the Hermiston Herald beat
Kinzua 7-2 to earn them a
second place berth in the state
tourney.
Kinzua 's only two runs
came in the sixth when Jamie
Sands and Jamie Query
scored. Other Kinzua batters
who got on base were: George
Waterland, Keith Curnutt,
John McCabe, Mike Rowell,
Delbert Binschus, Dan Math
ews and Buck Query.
Kinzua gained back injured
Mike Smith who has been out
most of the second half of the
season. Mike has seen action
in the city tourney and during
district play.
While gaining back Smith,
Kinzua lost Ron Bowman who
injured his knee in a playoff
