Labo Kids Arrive
Have you met Shuhei, or
Yoshihiki, or perhaps Keiko or
Jun'ichi? Or the pretty chape
rone, Hideko, who accompa
nied the Labo exchange stu
dents to our county? Chances
are, if you have been in
Heppner, you have seen one of
their smiling faces around the
town!
The group arrived Sunday
afternoon... after a hot trip by
way of Wasco and Gilliam
counties, where some of their
traveling -companions left to
join host families there. Each
was eagerly greeted by wait
ing host families, and hurried
off to become part of the
family for a month! While
their English in some cases is
limited, there is certainly no
communication problem
among the young travelers
and their host brothers and
sisters. Everyone tells me
they are fitting right in... and
having fun!
Shirley Palmer, coordinator
for the program, has arranged
a picnic Sunday afternoon,
August 6, for all families
hosting the Japanese exchan
gees in the four-county area,
which will be the only oppor- .
tunity for all the group to get
together while in our area.
Plans are also underway to
take those staying in the
Heppner area to the Umatilla
county fair on August 9, to
allow them to view a county
fair and 4-H activities. Shuhei
is visiting the Rick Curtis
home; Keiko at the Jim
Bloodsworth farm; Yoshihiko
with the Gerald Bergstrom
family; Jun'ichi at the Butch
Laughlin home. The chape
rone, Hideko is at the Les
Paustian home. One member
traveling with the group is
hosted by the Raymond
Allmaras family in Pendleton.
She is a pen pal of the
Allmares daughter... a friend
ship resulting from an ex
change of names by Noriko, a
Labo exchangee who visited
the Vern Evans family two
years ago.
The Labo-Oregon 4-H ex
change has far reaching
effects, and friendships. Ano
ther friendship formed, and
carrying on, takes Carolyn
O'Rourke, Pendleton, to visit
in Japan with Noriko and her
family at this time. Carolyn
also met Noriko when she was
at the Evans' home.
Registrations for Fair Events
Mailed
All 4-H members and lead
ers were mailed fair registra
tion forms last week. Home ec
members should have re
ceived a form listing all
contests open to them at
county fair, with instructions
or information concerning
each event. A wide number of
activities are listed, and we
encourage our 4-H kids to
participate! There are con
tests for junior, intermediate,
and senior age members. We
think the fun. ..and the learn
ing experiences are those that
offer the member the oppor
tunity to be there... doing!
Deadline to register for
contests is August 10, but we
certainly appreciate an early
reply. ..for each member must
be scheduled individually for
the contests and be notifed of
their special time!
Livestock leaders were
mailed registration forms on
which they should list all
members who will be exhibit
ing livestock. An early reply
on these also will allow John to
allocate stalls, and make all
other preparations necessary
for the exhibits!
Exhibit Help Available
Thinking of exhibiting some
of your garden products at
county fair? There's an excel
lent bulletin, "Preparing
Vegetables for Exhibit" that
tells you how many to include
in an exhibit, preferred size,
how to do everything. ..that
should be especially helpful to
those who are entering pro
ducts for the first time, or
those who didn't fare as well
last year as they might have
hoped! Available free, exten
sion offices!

Getting Ready for Fair
Preparations for the county
fair are moving along and
about to shift to high gear
during the next two weeks.
Work days have been sche
duled for pre-fair preparation
of buildings and grounds, with
a call for help from both open
class and 4-H superintendents
issued for Saturday, August
12. Additional work days, for
decorating and finalizing ar
rangements for 4-H home
economics, and all other
projects exhibited in the 4-H
Annex are planned for August
15 and 16. All interested
individuals are invited to
come out to work days to add
their ideas and efforts to get it
all together for fair!
