Kinzua takes third in
Hermiston City tourney
Kinzua captured third place
in the Hermiston City Tourney
held the past two weeks in
Hermiston.
Kinzua played six games to
land the third-place trophy.
The tournament had 14 teams
competing, with the Hermis
ton Herald team grabbing
first place by winning all four
games.
In the first game, Kinzua
romped past Wes Cruikshank
16-3 in five innings.
Kinzua scored runs in every
inning as it held its opponent
to runs in the first and second.
Leading Kinzua was Mike
Rowell with two home runs
and a double, which drove in
five runs. He was followed by
John McCabe who had six
RBIs on a home run, single
and triple.
Other Kinzua batters who
hit safely were : Jamie Sands
with a home run and a single;
Jamie Query with a single; a
triple by Keith Curnutt, a
single and double by Ron
Bowman; Dan Mathews with
two singles, Buck Query,
Delbert Binschus, and Dave
Eckman with singles.
In the second game Kinzua
came from behind in the third
inning and beat Sky High 6-4.
John McCabe and Ron
Bowman led the victors with
five hits between them. Other
hits which contributed to the
win were tagged by Keith
Curnutt, Mike Rowell, George
Waterland and Buck Query.
The third game was a close
battle with Erico nipping
Kinzua 9-8 in the bottom of the
seventh.
Erico took an early lead by
scoring two runs in the first.
Kinzua triggered back with
runs scored by John McCabe,
Mike Rowell, and George
Waterland. Others left on base
were Dan Mathews, Dave
Eckman and Ron Bowman.
The third inning Erico
rallied with two more runs as
Kinzua had one run on Keith
Curnutt's single. Gary Kemp's
single knocked him in.
Kinzua was scoreless in the
fourth as Erico had three
runs.
The fifth inning saw Buck
Query single cross the plate
for Kinzua. Kinzua gave it one
more try in the seventh with
two down as they scored three
runs to lead Erico 8-7.
However, Erico fought back
and scored two runs to win the
game.
Public input
sought for fishing
rules changes
Fish and Wildlife Depart
ment staff and Oregon State
Police officers are beginning
to develop recommendations
for 1979 angling regulations.
Anglers and sportsmen's
clubs with suggestions for
changes in the rules are
encouraged to submit them to
the Department within the
next few weeks.
Staff proposals will be
publicized in early September
for public comment. A public
hearing is scheduled in Port
land on September 23 for
presentation of all proposals,
including those from the
public, to the Fish and Wildlife
Commission. All public
recommendations should be
submitted on or before the
September 23 hearing.

The contest that followed
was won by Kinzua 20-3 over
Speciality Electric.
Kinzua scored runs in every
inning, with the opponents
managing runs in the first,
third and fifth.
Leading Kinzua was John
McCabe with two home runs,
one triple and single which
accounted for six RBIs. He
was followed by Dave Eck
man with a home run, single
and triple and five RBIs.
Other batters who helped ice
the win were Jamie Query
with two singles, Keith Cur
nutt two singles; two triples
by Mike Rowell, a single,
double and triple by Gary
Kemp, two singles by George
Waterland, and singles by
Buck Query and Mike Smith.
In the fifth game Kinzua
eliminated Erico 9-6.

Rodeo team returns
from national finals
in South Dakota
Five members of Heppner
High School's state champion
ship winning rodeo team were
returning to Morrow County
earlier this week, after com
peting in the national finals
high school rodeo in Huron,
S.D.
More than 1,000 high school
riders from across the country
reportedly took part in the
competition, after earning the
right to compete in the
national showdown through
competition in their home
states.
None of Heppner's five
entrants at the contest placed

hits each. Delbert Binschus'
back-to-back' doubles led Kin
zua RBIs with four.
Erico managed runs in the
first, fourth and sixth.
Kinzua victors were also
aided with hits from Gary
Kemp, George Waterland,
Buck Query and Dave Eck
man. The last game of the tourney
for Kinzua was against Roe
marks, with Roemarks com
ing up on top with a score of
5-2.
Kinzua could only manage
six hits by Ron Bowman,
Keith Curnutt, Gary Kemp,
George Waterland, Dan Math
ews, and Mike Rowell.
This weekend Kinzua will be
playing in the district recrea
tional tournament in Hermis
ton, with the top three teams
going to the state tourney held
the last weekend in August in
Eugene.

their strongest performance
of the season last weekend at
the Eastern Oregon District
Swimming Championships in
Pendleton.
Open track meet set for Aug. 13
Condon Kiwanis will host a
second annual Twilight All
Comers Track and Field Meet
on Sunday, Aug. 13, starting at
3 p.m. at the Condon High
School track.
Events will include 100 yard
dash, 220 yard dash, 440 yard
dash, 880 yard run, mile run,
three-mile run, shot put, long
jump and high jump.
The events will be divided
into three age divisions jun
iors age 15 and under,
intermediate 16-20, and senior
21 and above.

Three members of the Heppner High School Goldtrotters Julie Grieb, Wendy Myers
and Geri Grieb returned from a four-day workout at the Thunderbird Dance Drill Team
Camp held at Whitworth College in Spokane recently. The gals picked up a first place for the
best rendition of a new routine, one of seven new formations they will teach the other nine
members of the Goldtrotters. Julie is captain of the Goldtrotters and she says that fans can
expect a great show from the dance team at home football and basketball games.

track surface, so runners are
urged to wear short spikes if
track shoes are used.

race time, but pre-registration
is recommended. To pre-

It may not seem like it, but
it's getting to be that time of
year already. Football, time,
that is.
Heppner High football coach
John Sporseen has announced
that football equipment will be
issued next week, with the
first practice session of the
season slated to take place on
Aug. 21 from 6 to 8 p.m.
Seniors may pick up their
equipment from 8 to 9 p.m. on
Monday, Aug. 14, with juniors
scheduled to draw their gear
the following day, Aug. 15,
from 8 to 9. Sophomores will
pick up their equipment on
Wednesday, Aug. 16, from 8 to
9 p.m., and freshmen on Aug.
17, also from 8 to 9 p.m.
Practice sessions will be of
the daily double variety fol
lowing the initial Aug. 21
session, with workouts sche
duled Tuesday through Friday
from 7 to 8:30 a.m. and 6 to 8
p.m.
