Jim Ackley, Heppner High music teacher, forks over his
$15 to Lion Robb Rush for a Mustang jacket as Phyllis Kroll,
owner of Kroll's Dept. Store writes up the order. Kroll's
bought the nylon lined and unlined jackets at cost for the
Heppner Lions, who are selling them to raise money for
WIS band uniforms. The Lions have placed an order for
more jackets before the fall football season arrives. For your
jacket, see Robb Rush, Dr. Lee Hazen, Frank Pearson or
John Edmundson.
Camp. ..Spate Odyssey
Hail, rain, cold, hot the
weather chose to be unusual
during camp, but the campers
and counselors failed to find it
dampened their spirits. Camp
ers, counselors, and extension
staff numbered approxi
mately 100 for the total camp,
and everyone pitched in to
carry on with classes and
events in spite of the weather.
Reports coming in tell us the
campers really enjoyed the
variety of experiences.
Class instructors were Bob
Krein, Wildlife; Todd Harri
son, Dick Sargent, Survival;
Joanne Kock, Outdoor Cook
ery; State Forest Service;
Terry Lilybridge, plants and
conservation; Judy Laughlin,
Jan Spaulding, Oragami;
Francine Evans, potato
prints; Birdine Tullis, drift
wood sculpture and shell
necklaces; Lee Ansotegue,
John Nordheim, braiding;
Joanne Kock and counselors,
puppets; Julie Grieb, Wendy
Myers, tie dying; Heather
Winter, Lottie Laughlin, Rock
Painting. Other counselors
taught tissue paper crafts and
making bird feeders. In addi
tion, each counselor had
responsibilities for various .
camp projects and events. Pat
Wright served as camp nurse.
Song leaders were Julie
Grieb, Lottie Laughlin, Wendy
Myers, Heather Winter, and
Barb Cooney. A new addition
to camp activities this year
was a mini-fair and awards
program planned as part of
the closing ceremony, with
Julie Grieb and Wendy Myers
in charge. Morrow Counselors
were: Todd Harrison, Cole
man Devine, Erin Evans,
Mari Evans, Julie Grieb,
Wendy Myers, Lottie Laughlin
and Heather Winter.
One thing, sure to be
remembered by all, was the
hail storm on Saturday after
noon with hail stones nearing
the size of golf balls which
changed the atmosphere from
summer to winter; soaked the
tents and bedding, dented
automobiles and damaged
trailer homes. Ask the camp
ersthey'll all say they had
good times and are looking
forward to next year!
Mike and Jeanne Visit
Special visitors at 4-H camp
were Mike and Jeanne Howell
and children. They were
enroute home to Nyssa from
Corvallis and chose to come
by camp to see their 4-H
friends. Mike, formerly 4-H
and livestock agent in Morrow
County will return to work
with the extension service on
July 17 as livestock agent in
Malheur County. We know his
many friends in our county
will be happy to hear this
news.
Food Freezing I'pdate
Just in time to help home
makers with question con
cerning freezing the products
from fruit trees and gardens,
a special update on freezing
food will be offered at the
Annex, fairgrounds, Heppner,
2 p.m., July 19.
In addition, Elaine Husted,
Grant County extension agent,
will give answers to such
questions as: How do you
freeze your own TV dinners?
How do you freeze food in
pouches? Can you blanch in a
microwave oven? Should all

products such as bread be
stored in a freezer?

IFYE Arrives in County
Eric DeWulf, IFYE from
Belgium, arrived to spend
approximately a month with
the Roger Palmer family,
Heppner. Eric had almost as
many problems traveling
from Belgium to Heppner as
the camp had with weather.
He was scheduled to spend his
first few days at our 4-H camp,
but plane and bus schedules,
as well as other travel related
problems delayed his arrival
until Sunday, just in time to
see the campers leaving for
home. Eric is very interested
in our farming practices, as
well as 4-H program and
almost anything American.
We hope you'll all give him a
warm welcome as you meet
him around the county.
Other International
We'll be greeting PRYLE
Maurice Garner, Barbados,
West Indies on Sunday, July
16. Maurice, an extension
agent, will spend a week in
Morrow County. The following
Sunday will see the arrival of
the Japanses La bo exchange
students who will be staying
with host families for approxi
mately a month. Shirley
Palmer, coordinator for the
Labo Exchange tells me that
most families have received
letters from their incoming
exchangee, and all are an
xious for their arrival.
At the same time, Monica
Swanson, lone, will depart for
Japan chaperoning Oregon's
delegates for the two-way
exchange. Morrow 4-H has
gone International this year!
Think Fair
A reminder to all 4-H'ers
that county fair dates are
August 19-22. Time right now
to be finishing exhibits, and
thinking about the many
events and activities available
to 4-H members at the fair.
County fair premium books
may be picked up at the
Extension office Heppner, or
the County office and post
office, Irrigon.
