Spark arresters needed in forest
Effective immediately, in
spection of power saws for
adequate spark arrestors and
screens will be required
before permits will be issued
at Umatilla National Forest
offices during fire season,
June 15 through September 30,
according to Mac McCurdy,
Fire Management Staff Offi
cer. OBITUARY
William J. Doherty, 74, a
long-time Sandhollow area
rancher, died Sunday in
Hiersche's Nursing Home in
Pendleton.
Born in Pendleton, Mr.
Doherty graduated from Pen
dleton High School, then went
on to attend Columbia Univer
sity and the University of
Portland.
He was married to Mary
Agnes Daly on May 1, 1941 in
St. Mary's Catholic Church in
Pendleton. Mr. Doherty was a
member of St. Patrick's
Church in Heppner, the Holy
Name Society, Knights of
Edgar B. Enyart, 66 Spray,
died Wednesday, July 5, at
John Day.
Mr. Enyart was born Oct. 2,
1911 at Fossil, the son of Edgar
and Marian Templeton En
yart. He was married to Jerene
Law on Feb. 23, 1962 in
Tonopah, Nevada.
Mr. Enyart was a resident
of Wheeler County and a
surveyor for the United States
government most of his life.
Graveside services were
held Tuesday, July 11, at
Haystack Cemetery, Spray,
with the Rev. Fred Emerson,
Assembly of God Church,
officiating.
Casket bearers were Clar
ence Asher, Charles Hill, Ted
Cress, Ray Gates, Ralph
Jackson and Clarence Cress.
Mr. Enyart is survived by
his wife, Jerene, Spray; two
daughters, Karen Zettler,
Pascagoula, Miss, and Sharon
Kipper, Santa Monica, Calif.;
Spark arrestors and screens
must meet Forest Service
Standard 5100-1A, and should
be so formed and mounted
that they will shed sawdust
regardless of what position the
saw is operated. The spark
arrestor should be equipped
with a woven wire screen with
a maximum opening size of
.023 of an inch. These screens

North Pacific Grain Co-op.
Mr. Doherty was preceded
in death by a daughter,
JoAnne, and a son, Bernard.
Survivors include his wife,
Mary; son, William James
Doherty of Lexington; brother
Lawrence of Stanfield; sis
ters, Mrs. Pat (Frances)
Curran and Mrs. Charles
(Katherine) Monagle, both of
Pendleton, Mrs. A.C. (Rosel
la) Lindsay of Lexington,
Edgar B. Enyart
a step-daughter, Martha
Sayre, Ashland; a sister, Zola
Schallert, Riverside, Calif.;
eleven grandchildren, two
are available at most power
saw dealers and saw repair
shops.
All power saws used on
National Forest lands, whe
ther under such permits or
not, must meet the same
requirements.
Firewood permits are is
sued at the District offices in
Pendleton, Dale, Ukiah, and
Dorothy A. Doherty of Port
land; three grandchildren.
Recitation of the rosary was
held Tuesday in Burns Mortu
ary, Pendleton. Funeral mass
was held Wednesday in St.
Mary's Catholic Church in
Pendleton.
Vaul interment will be in
Olney Cemetery. Contribu
tions may be made to Blue
Mountain Chapter of the
University of Portland scho
larship fund in care of Jack
Monagle or Burns Mortuary.

Heppner. Ranger District of
fices are open Monday
through Friday from 7:45 a.m .
to 11:45 a.m. and from 12:30
p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Firewood cutting on the
Ranger Districts will be
confined to certain designated
cutting areas during fire
season. Maps showing these
areas are available at Ranger
District offices.

Fair and rodeo court first place
at M-F festival
The Morrow County Fair
and Rodeo Court received first
place among all courts en
tered in the Milton-Freewater
Festival Parade on July 1 and
that same week placed first in
the July 4 events at Condon.
On July 8 the court was busy
participating in the Crooked
River Roundup Parade at
Prineville, attending the
courts' luncheon and partici
pating in the Grand Entry at
the rodeo there.
Also traveling to Prineville
for the weekend's activities
were pennant bearers Anita
Palmer, Kris Pettyjohn and
Tami Holtz. Parents of the
court who attended were Mr.
and Mrs. Lee Palmer and
Debora, Mr. and Mrs. Cleo
Childers, Skip Pettyjohn and
Kelly, and Mr. and Mrs.
Harold Holtz, ail of lone.
Others there included Mr. and
Mrs. Paul Pettyjohn, Sr., Mr.
and Mrs. Dennis Doherty and
Lisa and Ben, Mr. and Mrs.
Marion Palmer and Mr. and
Mrs. Don Ankell.
A very large group of
Morrow County people atten
ded a picnic with the county
royalty at Condon after the
July 4 parade.
In June, Queen Donna won
honors as she placed first in
the . royalty event, a . goat
milking contest, at the Uma
tilla Sage Riders' Rodeo.
The court's next appearance
will be July 16 at the Elgin
Stampede. V

Laurie Jean Malcolm
The area is saddened by the
death of Laurie Jean Mal
colm, 18, Pendleton, a former
Heppner resident, who died in
an automobile accident near
Enterprise, Wednesday, July
5.
She was born in Tacoma,
Wash., the daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Bruce Malcolm. She
attended Heppner elementary
and junior high schools before
moving to Pendleton with her
family five years ago.
Miss Malcolm graduated
from Pendleton High School in
June with honors. She was a
member of the National Honor
Society and was on the
Buckerette's Dance Team for
two years. She was an avid
snow and water skier, and an
active member of St. Mary's
Catholic Church, Pendleton.
Recitation of the rosary was
Friday, July 7, at 7:30 p.m. at
Burns Mortuary, Pendleton.
Funeral mass was Saturday,
July 8, at 10 a .m . at St. Mary's
Catholic Church.
Miss Malcolm is survived by
her parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Bruce Malcolm ; brothers,
Steve and Jim ; a sister, Julie,
all of Pendleton; and grand
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Rich
ard Kenedy, Tacoma, Wash.
Interment was in Olney
Cemetery, Pendleton.
