Despite strong showings in
the relays and a number of
individual events, the Hepp
ner Swim Team lost its first
home meet of the season to
Pendleton's "B" team Mon
day by 11 points.
Heppner led the Pendleton
team all the way up to the
butterfly event, and from then
on, never trailed by a substan
tial margin.
The local team lost ground
in the butterfly, mainly "Be
cause we're a young team,
and the butterfly is one of the
last strokes to perfect," said
coach Phil Oaks.
Heppner standouts included
Karen Kenny, who took three
firsts and a third in individual
events, and Tye Arbogast,
who captured wins in the
freestyle and backstroke in his
first home meet.
"All in all, I was very proud
of all the kids," commented
Oaks. "With a little time and
work, we should get 'em next
time."
A complete list of Heppner
swimmers' times and placings
at the meet was unavailable
by press time.
On Sunday, Heppner will
meet swimmers from Hood
River, Prineville and White
Salmon in a 10:30 a.m. contest
here.
Heppner swimmers dive (top photo) and stroke their
way to within 11 points of Pendleton during season's first
home meet, held here Monday. Heppner led Pendleton
through most of the meet, scoring most of its points in relay
events.
Aquathon is set for
Heppners team
rs
Heppner Swim Team mem
bers will stage an Aqua-thon
at the pool Monday, July 24 to
raise money for team activi
ties, travel and expenses. The
event will take place between
5-8 p.m. that day.
Coach Phil Oakes said team
members are seeking spon
sors for their swim at the rate
of three to five cents per lap,
with a maximum of 200 laps. If
a sponsor pledged a nickel per
lap and the swimmer went the
distance, the total pledge
would amount to $10.
The swim team buys all of
its own equipment, pays for
the summertime coach and all
travel to meets by itself. Last
year swim team members and
parents went throughout the
community raising funds that
enabled the city pool to open
when the city had no money.
