The United Nations in New
York was the destination of 16
Oregon high school students
including Janet McElligott of
lone, and Joseph Daltoso of
Boardman as the 28th annual
United Nations Pilgrimage for
Youth, sponsored by the Odd
Fellows and Rebekahs, got
underway in Portland last
Thursday morning.
Including teenagers from
throughout the state, the
group left by bus for the 23-day
journey which will include
tours and explanations of sites
of interest in Washington, D.C.
as well as the United Nations.
Most youngsters were win
ners of speech and essay
contests sponsored by local
Odd Fellow Lodges and Rebe
kah Lodges, which pay the
winners' way on these annual
trips.
It is part of an international
program through which high
school students from the U.S.
and Canada are introduced to
the United Nations.
The Odd Fellows and Rebe
kahs are the only fraternal
organization with a "seat" in
the U.N.'s press section.
Phillip Sampson, 16, from
New South Wales, Australia
joined the Oregon delegation
at the specific invitation of
Mrs. Mavis Paull, an Oregon
ian who is this year's presi
dent of the International
Association of Rebekah As
semblies, the international
Rebekah organization.

Science Camp at Bartlow,
W.Va., where she is spending
nearly a month taking part in
classes and seminars ranging
from radio astronomy to
ecology. Only two high school
seniors from each state were
selected to attend the camp.
With Kathy is Oregon's other
representative at the West
Virginia camp, Amy Cruik

the Oregon Junior Angus
Association's showmanship
contest, qualifying to repres
sed their home state at the
National Junior Angus Asso
ciation Show at Des Moines,
Iowa, July 20-21.
The state showmanship con
test was held in conjunction
with the 9th annual Oregon
Junior Angus Assn. Field Day,
vhich took place recently at
Mulino.
During other activities at team category.
the state angus field day, Geri Ken Grieb was voted vice
Grieb of Lexington won first president of the Oregon Junior
place in the FFA angus Angus Assn., with Geri Grieb
judging contest, with Heppner elected secretary-treasurer.
High School's FFA judging Meridee Smith of Beaver
team taking first place in the Creek was elected president.
