The Pay Less Drugs Northwest, Inc. chain was founded a generation ago by Peyton Hawes, formerly of
Spokane, with a drug store in downtown Portland. Eventually, the store's type of merchandising was capable of in
cluding a broader base of goods, and so stores now offer a wider range of items to meet needs for the home, out
door activities, sporting goods and recreation purposes.
The Portland-based chain, in which the Hermiston store is the 81st, conducts considerable research before it
commits more than a million dollars in starting a new store. Hermiston's economical climate has made the addition
of its new Pay Less store possible.
Pay Less likes to iocate stores in shopping centers wnere it can be a part of a ' one-stop shopping experience ',
as one store manager puts it. A customer shopping with Pay Less in a shopping center can fill the rest of his or her
needs without driving to another location.
Pay Less stocks only top grade name brands, and offers lines that will meet many of the customers' needs.
The store also carefully selects employees and trains them to establish a personal relationship with the
customer.
Today the president of Pay Less Drug Stores Northwest, Inc., is a registered pharmacist, as are numerous
store managers throughout the 81 -store chain.'
Among the many services offered by the Pay Less pharmacy are the hours (open evenings and Sundays)
which makes the fulfillment of prescriptions a little more convenient for customers who may have to work late or for
other reasons can't make it to the store during the daytime hours.
For those customers interested in additional savings, Pay Less offers a full line of fresh generic drugs. In ad
dition, the Pay Less pharmacy is eager to serve any customer who may be covered by Public Assistance or in
surance plans. Customers who need any kind of assistance or information need simply to contact the Payless
pharmacist.
Almost everything that's photographic, in hardware, sporting goods or automotive equipment can be found at
the new Hermiston Pay Less store.
The camera department is ideally complete. Not Only does it have most popular'camera lines, slide and movie
projectors, screen accessories, films and photo finishing, there are wrist watches, radios, tape recorders, har
monicas and guitars.
And that's not all. There are binoculars, telescopes, billfolds, electric shavers and accessories, plus a large
selection of record albums, singles and tapes.
In the sporting goods department are all the major national lines of camping equipment, backpacking needs,
baseball, football and basketball supplies, golfing items, tennis equipment, rifles and handguns, ammunition,
reloading equipment and boating accessories.
The hardware department is home for things like hand and power tools, weatherproofing materials, electrical
and plumbing supplies, ladders, fireplace accessories and a full line of interior and exterior paints and supplies. The
hardware department even includes a good selection of bicycles and related equipment.
A well-stocked automotive department includes the top brands of motor oil, air filters, replacement parjs, car
accessories, winter-summer car supplies such as anti freeze, tire chains, ice scrapers and much more.
