club during state champion
ship competition last weekend
in Redmond.
A total of six Heppner
cowboys and cowgirls quali
fied for national high school
championship, to be held July
31-Aug. 6 in Huron, S.D.
Included in those making the
trip to South Dakota will be
Janice Healy, who won all
around cowgirl honors at the
state championship rodeo.
Janice took first in the
barrel race and second in cow
cutting during the Redmond
rodeo. For winning all around
honors, she also received a
saddle and silver belt buckle.
Runner-up for the girls' all
around crown was Heppner's
Jana Sleagall, who was third
in breakaway roping, third in
the barrels and fourth in team
roping at the state champion
ship. Other Heppner rodeo stand
outs to qualify for the nation
als were Ron Currin, Law
rence Rice, Tony Currin, and
Cindy Dougherty
Ron finished a scant seven
points behind all around boys
winner Sam Willis of Red
mond, taking third in both the
calf roping and bulldogging
events. During one round in
bulldogging competition, Cur
rin brought the bovine to the
ground in a red hot 4.37
seconds. '
Rice earned his berth at the
national rodeo by finishing
fourth in state saddle bronc
competition. Tony Currin
qualified by finishing third in
cow cutting.
Cindy Dougherty took first
in pole bending and fourth in
team roping at the state
championship, with Jana
Steagall placing third in both
the breakaway and barrels
and fourth in team roping.
Heppner earned a total of
474 points in the finals, well
ahead of second place Red
mond at 366. Sherman County
finished third, followed by
Pendleton.

deo were Mary and Jo Lynn
Daly, Wade West and Jack
Yocom.
This will be the final year of
high school competition for
Mustang rodeo club members
Janice Healy, Cindy Dough
erty, Ron Currin, Lawrence
Rice and Jack Yocom.
The top four finishers in the
Redmond rodeo qualified to
compete for the nationals.
First place finishers in each
event were awarded belt
buckles, with plaques going to
those placing second, third
and fourth.

Flag tourney set for Willoiv
Creek golfers
Coming event: The annual
flag tournament will be on
July 4.
In this special tournament
each player is allowed the
course par of 30 strokes plus
his nine hole handicap. When
the total of these strokes has
been used, the golfer places a
small flag in the ground , to
mark the point he reached.
The golfers who progress
furthest are the winners. A
bar-b-que will be included in
the day's activities. Golfers
will tee-off at 4:00 p.m.
Heppner swimmers drop season opener
Heppner's swim team was
overpowered by Milton Free
water during the season's first
contest last Thursday.
Milton-Freewater racked up
a total of 242 points to 172 for
heppner, but coach Phil Oakes
was not all that disappointed
with the results.
,i "They had a much bigger
team than we did," he
commented. "All in all, I'm
really proud of our team,
especially since they'd only
been in the water four days
before the meet."
Heppner girls in the 9-10 age
category took first in the
120-yard medley relay. In the
11-12 boys division, Heppner
beat Milton-Freewater by 10
seconds. Heppner boys in the
13-14 category finished the 240
yard relay in 1:47.6.
Heppner took the top two
places in individual comp
etition in the 60-yard freestyle
for girls 10 and under.
Finishing first in a field of
eight was Andrea Ball, in 25.37
seconds. Second place went to
Heidi Samples, who crossed
the finish line in 25.8 seconds.
Deana Reid and Lana Reid
finished sixth and seventh.
Pam Orr of Heppner was
second in a field of seven in the
11-12 girls' age division for the
60-yard freestyle. Derina Reid
was fifth and Brenda McMunn
sixth in the same event.
Thomas James and Cem
George finished first and
second in the 11-12 year old
boys' 60-yard, and Karen
Kenny took third in the 13-14
girls' 120-yard competition.

ners included first and second
place finishes by Shane
Laughlin and Terry Gray in
the 13-14 boys' 120-yard free
style. Kevin Gray took first in
the boys' 15-18 division 120
yard freestyle in a time of
1:31.4 Shelly Biddle was first
and Stephanie Sumner third in
the girls' 10 and under division
60-yard breaststroke. Clifford
Lucas was third in the same
event for boys.
Cem George and John
Sumner finished first and
second in the 11-12 boys'
division breaststroke. In the
120 yard breaststroke for 13-14
girls, Sandra Ward was first
and Lottie Laughlin second.
Shane Laughlin and John
Bridenbach were first and
second in 13-14 boys' 120-yard
breaststroke, against no M-F
competition.
Debbie Klaus finished se
cond in the girls' 15-18
120-yard breaststroke. Kevin
Gray was second in the same
event for boys.
Heidi Samples and Andrea
Ball finished first and second
in the 10-under girls' back
stroke event, with Clifford
Lucas taking third in the same
event for boys. Ellen Arbogast
was second in 11-12 age
division, with Heppner back
strokers Cem George and Jon
Sumner placing one-two in the
11-12 boys' division.
In the girls' 60-yard back
stroke for 13-14 year olds,
Karen Kenney was first and
Sandra Ward second. In the
boys division of the same
event, Terry Gray was second
and Jeff Orr third. Debbie
Klaus was second in the 15-18
division 120 backstroke and in
the boys' category, Kevin
Gray was unchallenged.
In the fly event for girls 10
and under, Shelly Biddle and
Andrea Ball finished first and
second, with Cem George and
Thomas James taking first
and second in the 11-12
category. Lottie Laughlin and
Mary Arbogast were second
and third in the girls' 12-14
division. Shane Laughlin and
Terry Gray finished one-two
in the 13-14 boys' age division.
Karen Kenny was first in the
girls' 13-14 120-yard IM event.
This weekend the Heppner
squad will travel to Hood
River for the second meet of
the season.
Sky High of Hermiston
slugged the bat and came up
with eight runs in the third
inning to defeat Kinzua last
Monday in Lexington.
The 9-2 victory put Kinzua in
third place in the Hermiston
Slo-Pitch Softball League.
They received a trophy for
their first half finish.
Kinzua's only runs came in
the fourth with Jamie Sands
and Mike Rowell crossing the
plate with singles. They were
plagued with several errors.
Sky High followed in the
seventh with one more run to
ice the vic
tory.
In the first game of the
second half, Kinzua came
from behind and beat Midway
Tavern 7-1 in Hermiston
Monday night.
Tough defense kept the
game scoreless to the fifth.
Midway scored on a base hit
when Kinzua's catcher missed
the tag at home plate.
Kinzua triggered back with
five runs in the bottom of the
fifth. George Waterland star
ted the rally with one of his
two base hits, followed by .
Delbert Binschus. Pitcher
Gary Kemp knocked them in
as he tagged a double. Keith
Curnutt got on base with a ball
hit over third base but was
forced off second with a Jamie
Sands single. John McCabe
ended the inning with a home
run.
Midway threatened in the
sixth but couldn't score.
Kinzua's last two runs came
in the sixth as Mike Rowell
and Dan Mathews crossed the
plate after tagging singles.
Delbert Binschus and Jamie
Query were left on base.
Kinzua s next game will be
Wednesday, July 5 at Lexing
ton against the Hermiston
Herald. Game time is at 7p.m.
Wranglers list winners
in playday contest
The Wranglers hcrse club
held its first summer playday
last weekend, with Angie
Ashbeck taking first place in
pole bending competition for
riders eight years old and
younger.
Finishing second in the
event was Mike Van Schoiack,
followed by Craig Angell.
In the 9-13 age division of the
pole race, Tina Galbraith
took first, followed by Bridget
Greenup and Shelly Stroeber.
In the boot race for those 14
and older, Art Galbraith was
first, Larry Angell second,
and Ann Van Schoiack third.
Angie Ashbeck was first in the
barrel race for riders 8 and
under, followed by Mike Van
Schoiack and Ted Schwarz. In
the 9-13 division, Bridget
Greenup and Tina Galbraith
tied for first and second, with
Pat Schwarz placing third.
Bob VanSchoiack won the
water race for riders over 14,
with Ann Van Schoiack second

The mystery race event was
won by Art Galbraith in the
senior division, with Bob
VanSchoiack second and his
sister Ann third. Bridget
Greenup and Tina Galbraith
tied for first and second in the
9-13 division, with Pat
Schwarz placing third.
The next Wranglers' play
day will be held July 7 at 7
