Contending for the champion
ship slot with Morrow County
were Hermiston's Inland
Empire and Tum-A-Lum
teams.
Morrow County snapped a
two game losing streak on
Tuesday, trouncing the Herm
iston Herald 11-3. .
Standout hurler John Bier
was in good form for the local
team during the j contest,
striking out six batters and
giving up only three hits in the
first three innings, and none
through the remainder of the
game.
All but one of the Hermiston
runs was unearned, as Mor
row County gave up three
costly errors. But hitting more
than made up for the fielding
miseues. with MC baiters
slapping out 12 hits.
Morrow County was ahead
4-3 going into the fourth
inning, then exploded for
seven runs in the seventh and
final inning. John Murray was
3-4 at the plate, with Dale
Holland logging a perfect 3 for
3 stint in the batter's box.
Donny Taylor belted a double
with bases loaded, driving in
two runs. Jeff Hams was 2 for
4 and Shawn LaRue 2 for 3.
A total of 14 Morrow County
players got a chance to play in
the contest, with many of
them scoring hits.
It was a different story last
Thursday night, when Morrow
County lost to Tum-A-Lum 4-6.
"We played good," said
Morrow County manager Jim
Swanson, "but not as good as
we normally do. I think the
kids were still down from
getting beat on Tuesday, by
Inland Empire."
Errors were one factor in
explaining Morrow County's
Thursday night loss. Their
three errors cost four un
earned runs.
Morrow County was ahead
4-1 going into the sixth inning,
before Tum-A-Lum burst out
for 5 runs. John Bier started
the game for Morrow County
until the costly fifth inning
when he was relieved by Craig
Gutierrez. Gutierrez was in
turn relieved by Holland.
Despite the score, Morrow
County out-hit the Hermiston
squad 9-5. But the hits were
strung out throughout the
innings, with run-scoring ral
lies failing to materialize.
Five Morrow County team
members were selected to
play on the Babe Ruth
League's All Star team for the
14-15 year old age division. In
addition, three team members
were named to the 14-year old
division All Star squad. Mor
row County is better repre
sented on the All Star teams
than any other club in the
league.
Named to the 14-15 division
squad were John Bier, Doug
Holland, John Murray, Rick
Cole and Jeff Hams. Serving
on the second All Star teeam
were Roger Morter, Denny
Starr and Jay Hayes. Mem
bers of the 14-15 team will play
in an invitational tournament
in Lewiston then a showdown
tourney July 12-14 in Pend
leton. Playoffs for the 13-year
old All Stars will be July 21-23
in The Dalles.

CLIP AND SAVE
Carelessness has no boundaries. No one can predict when or
where the next tragic fire will happen. That's why it's
important that we all do our jobs and practice fire prevention
in every way.
Make it your business to look for fire hazards. ..in the home,
on your property and where you work. And when you're
traveling, keep an eye out for smoke, and if you see it, report
it.
This year, with heavy growth of wild grasses and economic
crops, the fuel for fire is abundant. Be extra careful when
traveling the wide open spaces and forest lands of Eastern
Oregon because the FIRE DANGER IS HERE NOW.
Carry the phone numbers on this page with you and tape an
extra copy to your phone book or shop wall. The people on the
other end of the line are ready to bring a crew into action on
moment's notice. For added safety, put a shovel, axe and
small bucket in your car's trunk or pickup. REPORT ALL
FIRES IMMEDIATELY.
And, while you're thinking about it, make a spot check
around your home... here's a few tips.
Are lumber and poles, brush and trash, cleared away
from buildings?
Are useless old sheds or buildings torn down?
Are hoses readily available around the yard and
outbuildings?
Are combustibles stored safely, in cooler areas? (This
means approved containers for gas and oil not glass jugs.)
Is equipment properly equipped with mufflers or spark
arrestors? (Farm tractors, power saws, recreational
vehicles, and to a lesser extent, cars, often times are the
cause of rural fires. WATCH BEHIND YOU when operating
power machinery.
Are YOU ready, if a fire breaks out?
