Gary Kemp beginsmotion, lobs pitch to Hermiston
Kinsua tied for second place in
Hermiston Slo-Pitch League
With only one game remaining
in the first half of season play,
Kinzua Corporaton is tied for
second place in the Hermiston
Slo-Pitch Softball League with
a 10-2 record.
Kinzua has won seven
straight to bring them to their
present position. Wins tallied
by the Heppner team include:
a 26-2 score over Steve's
Carpet. 10-6 rally over Hughes
Desert Marina, a forfeit over
Simplot and Roemark's, a 10-0
tromp over Pacific Northwest
Bell, a squeeze over N-5
Fruitstand, an 18-0 romp over
Midseason Babe Ruth

Statistics compiled for the
first half of Babe Ruth League
season play show Morrow
County leading the league in
batting, with a 4.40 team
average.
Morrow County's defense
was also strong during the
first half of season play, with
opposing batters averaging
only .200 against the local
team. Morrow County batted a
total of 94 hits compared with
32 hits for opponents, scoring
107 runs to 60 for all
contending teams.
At the midseason point,
Doug Holland held a batting
average of .390, with 13 RBIs
and 2 home runs. Jeff Hams
was also hitting .390, with 8
RBIs.
Rick Cole was leading the
league in hitting, with an
average of .6:S0, plus 9 RBIs.
John Murray's midseason
average was .430, with 7 RBIs
Linda Hutchinson of Heppner displays trophies won
during four-wheel drive competition last weekend at Starkey.
Mrs. Hutchinson took second place in a barrel race and third
in drag racing during her first experience at off-the-road
competition. About 100 entrants from four states competed.

Wes Cruishank, a 15-0 victory
over Speciality Electric, an
18-2 roll over Gourmet, a 5-2
win over Hermiston Herald,
and a 9-4 win over Midway
Tavern.
Losses were to Stockdale
Real Estate, 4-2, and Erico
Building Supply, 14-3.
This is the fifth year Kinzua
has competed in the leage.
They were second in 1976 and
third last year. Gary Kemp is
this year's coach.
While competing in the
Hermiston Softball league,
Kinzua has also participated
and a homer. Gregg Rietmann
was hitting an even 600, with
11 RBIs. John Bier was
averaging .470 at the plate,
with 6 RBIs. Ralph Morter
tallied a midseason record of
.350 with 5 RBIs, with Shawn
LaRue posting a .290 average
and 4 RBIs. Earl Hammond
logged a .530 average at the
plate, slugging in 7 RBIs and a
homer. Mary Kincaid tallied a
.330 average, with 4 RBIs.
Craig Gutierrez averaged
.170 at the plate, with Rick
Klaus logging a .270 average.
Bob Bier, in his five trips to
the plate, tallied a .670
average.
In the pitching department,
John Bier held a midseason
record of 2 wins and a loss,
with one save. He threw 17
strikeouts and one no-hitter.
Rick Cole logged a 2-0 record
at the mound, with Gutierrez
holding down an even 1-1,

month. They walked away
with a fourth place trophy in
Burns. They boosted wins over
Faith Center 17-4, Kidwell
18-7, and Pizza Factory 10-8.
The following weekend the
team captured ninth place in
the Hermiston Invitational
Slo-Pitch Tournament. The
team failed to place in the
Pendleton City Tournament
held this past weekend.
Kinzua has been led by Ron
Bowman and Mike Rowell,
with Bowman batting .670 and
Rowell .620. Other team mem

Sherer, Mahoney top
point winners in
Junior Rodeo action
Brett Sherer of Heppner
won all-around honors at last
weekend's Western States
Junior Rodeo at Lakeview.
Brett topped the junior
division category by taking
first place in both the pole and
barrel races, third in dobbing
and sixth in team roping.
Fellow Morrow Countian
Trisha Mahoney placed third
in team roping and sixth in the
barrel race.
Junior Rodeo action at
Halfway, Ore., last weekend
resulted in an all-around title
win by Heppner's Jana Stea
gall. Jana topped the senior
girls' division by taking first
in dobbing, third in break
away roping, tying for third
and fourth in the barrels, and
placing fifth in the goat event.
Tara Mahoney was the top
girls' point winner in the
junior division, taking second
in breakaway roping and
fourth in the pole race.
Janice Healy took first in
the barrel race and first in
breakaway roping, with Cindy
Dougherty placing sixth in the
barrel race, and Brett Sherer
taking first in the poles and
third in breakaway.

team so far this season is the
loss of right fielder Mike
Smith who was hitting over

deo Club ended the regular
Oregon high school season on
a high note last weekend in
Vale, witn a 127'a to 86'2 point
win over second place conten
der Redmond.
The Mustangs finished well
ahead of all other statewide
teams during the regular
season, ending with a 5-1
win-loss record.
Janice Healy took all around
girls' honors at the Vale meet,
after finishing first in cow
cutting, fourth in. breakaway
roping, fifth in the barrel race,
fourth in the poles, and sixth in
goat tying.
Her sister, Maureen, fin
ished first in goat tying,
second in cow cutting, and
tenth in the pole race. Law
rence Rice took first in saddle
bronc competition, followed
by Jack Yocum in third place.
Jana Steagall was third in
goat tying, tenth in the
breakaway, and teamed up
with Cindy Dougherty for a
fourth place finish in team
roping.
Cindy was also sixth in the
pole race, seventh in barrels
and third in breakaway rop
ing. Despite a highly respec
table time of 12.98 seconds,

roster qualified for the state
championship high school ro
deo, to be held this weekend in
Redmond.
Cindy Dougherty and Jana
Steagall qualified for the state
finals in team roping, girls
division, with Ron and Tony
Currin qualifying for the boys'
division in the same event.
Jack Yocum will compete
for the state championship in
bull riding, with Ron Currin,
ranked third in the state,
competing in the bulldogging
event, along with teammate
Wade West.
