H.B. Rudolph, Forest Super
visor of Umatilla National
Forest, announces the sale of
three Supervisor size timber
sales and four District Ranger
size timber sales sold during
the month of may.
Hudspeth Sawmill Co. pur
chased the Tick Salvage Sale
of an estimated 470,000 board
feet May 5 at the Ukiah
Ranger Station. Of the three
bidders present Hudspeth
Sawmill Co.'s bid of $46,181.80
was high with the final bid
prices per species being
$111.11 for ponderosa pine and
$44.00 for Douglas-fir and
other species.
On May 15 at the oral aution
for the Rail timber sale three
bidders attended, with high
bid going to Kinzua Corpora
tion for a total value of
$801,000.00. This sale of an
estimated 3,500,000 board feet
was appraised at a total value
of $385,812.00. The final bid
rates per thousand board feet
by species was $266.00 for
ponderosa pine and $158.00 for
Douglas-fir and other species,
an average of $118.74 per
thousand board feet above the
appraised value. The sale is
an area of 665 acres located on
the Heppner Ranger District
in Grant County.
The Bench sale of an
estimated 80 thousand board
feet sold on the Pomeroy
Ranger District to J.B. Lum
ber Co. for a lump sum
amount of $13,210.40, the only
bid submitted on May 16.
The Peep Creek timber sale
was purchased by Louisiana
Pacific Corp. for $733,941.00
for an estimated 8,400,000
board feet of timber. The final
bid rates per thousand board
Childers
receives
VFW
award
Harvey Childers, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Cleo B. Childers of
lone, has won the Outstanding
Student and Citizenship
Award at L.H. Bates Vocational-Technical
Institute in
Tacoma, Wash.
Childers received a plaque
and a dinner in his honor for
winning the award. He was
chosen for the honor from
among 2,600 students attend
ing the school. The award is
sponsored by the Veteran of
Foreign Wars.
A 1976 graduate of lone High
School, Childers will graduate
from the Tacoma institute in
September, with a degree in
diesel mechanics.

Smith
visits in
Heppner
Austin I. Smith, retired,
Portland, was in Heppner
visiting his mother, Letha
Archer, and his old friends
and former classmates Mon
day through Wednesday of
this week.
He came to the Gazette
Times to see how it had
changed since he used to help
there after his days at high
school. He also worked for
Ferguson Brothers, for
Vaughan and Goodman and on
ranches around town, when
they were mostly sheep ran
ches. Mrs. Smith, who accom
panied him here, taught in
Heppner as Esta Miller from
1927 through 1929. They have
lived in Portland since 1932.
Austin was formerly em
ployed by Safeway Stores and
by the Portland Memorial
Mausoleum. He still works a
little as a special security
guard.

tion, the high bidder of two
bidders present. The sale area
is located near Penland Lake
in Morrow County. The Wall
Creek Salvage sale was pur
chased by Brooks-Scanlon,
high bidder of the two bidders
present, for a total Value of
$112,120.00. The sale was
appraised at $89,254.00 for an
estimated volume of 560,000
board feet of timber. Final bid
prices per thousand board feet
is: ponderosa pine, $216,00;
Douglas-fir and other species,
$182.00. The sale area is
located in the upper part of
Wall Creek, south of Bull
Prairie Lake in Grant and
Wheeler counties.
On May 24 Ellingson Timber
Co. presented the only bid
received for the Redboy Again
timber sale located on the
Dale Ranger District in Grant
County. The estimated volume
of 4,500,000 board feet sold for
the appraised value of
$287,795.00. The per thousand
board foot price by species is:
ponderosa pine, $117,59; Douglas-fir
and western larch,
$67.53; white fir and other
species, $70.52. An estimated
200,000 board feet of lodgepole
pine sold for $20.05 per
thousand board feet with an
additional volume of 600,000
board feet of lodgepole pine,
presented as an optional bid
item selling for $0.50 per
thousand board feet.
