Despite the score, Tues
day's game was something of
a pitcher's duel, with Morrow
County's ace hurler John Bier
logging 10 strikeouts and
giving up no hits until the sixth
Earl Hammond belted a
two-run scoring double, and
another double was tagged by
teammate Jeff Hams.
On Monday, a road trip to
Hmniston netted Morrow
County a 10-6 win over Sports

credited with five strikeouts,
which accounted for all but
one of Morrow County's outs
in the final two innings.
The Hermiston team threa
tened in the final inning of
play, when with bases loaded
and two men out, a PP&L
hitter punched out a triple
scoring three runs.
"Both teams played great
baseball," commented Mor
row County Manager Jim
Swanson. "We had excep-'
tional fielding, only giving up
one error, and managed to
chip away at them with our
hitting."

Batting told the story of that
game, although Morrow Coun
ty's Craig Gutierrez gave up
only one hit in his four innings
at the mound.
Rick Cole tagged his first
home run of the season for
Morrow County, in addition to
swatting out two other hits in
four trips to the plate. Cole
batted in a total of four runs.
Another Morrow County
hitting standout was John
Murray, who was 3 for 3, with
3 RBIs. Other local youngsters
tallying hits included Mary
Kincaid and Don Taylor.
All in all, Morrow County
belted 10 hits to 2 for Sports
Village. But errors were a
factor, as only one of the
Hermiston team's six runs
was earned.
Last Thursday, PP&L was
also the center of attention for
the Morrow County team. A
that time, Morrow County was
tied at 5-2 with the Hermiston
team for first place in league
standings.
Morrow County prevailed in
that contest, ending up with a
9-6 victory.
Rick Cole went five innings
for Morrow county, striking
out three, and picking off
three baserunners. He was
relieved by John Bier. Only
two of PP&L's six runs were
earned.
Morrow County outhit the
Hermiston squad 6-4. All but
one of the Morrow County hits
were singles. The lone extra
base hit was a double by
Shawn LaRue. Gregg Riet
mann was 3 for 4, with 2 RBIs.
Other hitters included Doug
Holland and Rick Cole.

HHS Rodeo Club's
perfect season ends
Heppner High School's ro
deo club lost a bid for its fifth
consecutive first-place trophy
of the season during action
last weekend in Madras.
The Mustangs finished sec
ond to Redmond, despite
outstanding performances by
several local cowboys and
cowgirls including an all
around cowgirl win by Janice
Healy.
Even wilh the second place
finish, Heppner stands well
ahead of all challengers in the
statewide high school rodeo
competition, with only two
meets remaining this season.
During the Madras rodeo,
all-around trophy winner Jan
ice Healy took first in both the
breakaway roping and barrel
race, and third in cow cutting.
Ron Currin was first place
finisher in the bulldogging
event, with brother Tony
winning the boys' cow cutting
division.
Cindy Dougherty was sixth
in the breakaway and won
first place in the pole race.
Jana Steagall took fourth in
the poles and ninth in
breakaway roping. Lawrence
Rice finished fourth in the
bareback bronc event, and
Maureen Healy earned ninth
place points in goat tying.
The Heppner team will take
part in two more rodeos in
Vale and in Redmond before
the regular season ends.
