Extension
Events... with
Birdine Tullis
(5 am
This is a good time to plan
ahead for summer food pre
servation. For those planning
to can food products using
pressure canners, this would
include having gauges
checked. It is imperative that
this be done at least once a
year to insure accurate pro
cessing time. While this ser
vice is not available locally, it
is possible to have gauges
checked at the Coast to Coast
store, Pendleton, or another
store in Walla Walla. It is only
necessary to take the gauge
you do not have to take the
entire lid and there is a small
charge for the service.
All nonacid vegetables,
meats, fish and poultry must
be canned by pressure. Fruits,
tomatoes and pickles may be
canned by the water bath.
If you are in doubt about any
food preservation method,
extension officers have the
very best information con
cerning cannind, freezing,
drying, and jams and jellies.
The information is free to you.
Other food preservations
helps will be available to
Morrow County liomemakers
this summer when Extension
presents special programs on
freezing foods, as well as food
drying.
Fair Premium Books Avail
able Now
All 4-H families were mailed
fair premium books recently
by Fair Board Secretary, Liz
Cur is, as well as other
individuals' or families who
exhibited at county fair last
year. We have a supply of fair
books in both the County
Extension Office, Heppner,
and the County Office, Irrigon,
available to anyone wishing to
pick one up.
Right now is the time to look
the book over to see the wide
variety of classes open to both
4-H, FFA, and open class
exhibitors, and start planning
your county fair exhibits.
Participation by all county
residents is what makes a
good fair.

event that recognizes you, the
leader. Sponsoring the steak

4-H
Leader
Salute
Helen Acock
An efghfh year 4-H leader in the Boardman-Irrigon
area-andoneweholddear-thafs Helen Acock! Many local
ranchers and pet owners know her as the very efficient nurse
in the Hermiston Veterinary Clinic a job from which she
recently retired or as the owner of Acock and Sons
registered Hereford cattle. But we know her as some one who
really loves kids always there to help not only her club
members, but any other kid who needs a helping hand. The
Acock Ranch always makes its calves available to 4-H and
FFA members at a price the kids can afford, because they ,
know the value of starting with a good animal. We look ,
forward to seeing Helen at County Fair. We know she'll be
there, helping contact buyers for the auction, and seeing that
everything is done to help the kids have a good experience
with their projects. Helen Acock, we salute you as a 4-H
leader and a person!
