TEN The Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon, Thursday, May 25, 1978 Extension Events... Birdine with Tullis heat set-aside deadline ex teBded Summer Recess Most planned events for homemakers involved in the Extension Family Living Pro gram take a summer break in Morrow County. Study groups are meeting in May for their final meeting until September, as well as advisory and program development groups. We recognize that summer should be a family time, as well as the fact that many of our interested women have more farm responsibility dur ing harvest months. A plus for me is that the break from adult activities allows more time for 4-H summer camp, special pro grams, and preparations for county fair. So happy sum mertime to all ! We hope to see you involved again in the fall. Homemaker's advisory elects Officers New leadership for this committee was elected at the May meeting, as well as new committee members identi fied to take responsibility in guiding Extension home maker events. New officers are: Chairman, Lyla Wilcox; Vice Chairman, Yvonne St. Dennis, Irrigon; Secretary, Laura Broderick, Lexington; and Treasurer, Mildred Wright, Heppner. Leaving the committee af ter serving three years are Vera Cooley, Irrigon, and Mildred Rhea, Lexington. Our thanks to the two retiring members, as well as those who take over leadership. The Wonders of Wheat . . .Lisa Nelson, Morrow Wheat hearts Chairman, recently brought to my attention a 14 minute film, available from Oregon Wheat Commission, which might be of interest to a variety of groups, as well as 4-H foods leaders. "The Won ders of Wheat" emphasizes the importance of wheat in human nutrition, by outlining the role of bread in world history and the development of cultures since the Neolithic Age, and even sneaks in a step-by-step bread making demonstration. The film is available from the Wheat Commission Office, or by calling Lisa. Oregon Wheat Growers Live stock Show.. .The Dalles Have you reminded your 4-H members of this event? Clubs or individuals may eflter the 4-H Livestock Judging Con test, and Meats Judging Contest, Monday, June 5, without pre-registration. Re gistration time for livestock is noon, with contest at 1 p.m. The 4-H Meats Judging Contest is open to all 4-H members, and will also be June 5, with registration at 2:30p.m. and contest at 3 p.m. We especially encourage food club members to participate in the meats judging. Although we have no mem bers exhibiting animals at The Dalles show this year, we encourage clubs to participate in the judging events, to gain valuable experience in pre paration for our county fair. This would be a good club extra event.. .to enjoy the livestock show, as well. 4-H Camp.. .June 29-July 2 We want to be sure all 4-H'ers, 4th through 7th grades, are including 4-H Camp at Cutsforth Park in their summer plans, so we'll be sending out registration forms this week. The camp experience will again be offered to members of this age group in Gilliam, Wheeler, Sherman and Morrow coun ties. Staff for the event will be from the four county area, as well as counselors. v A Counselor Training and Planning Session for all coun selors who will be assisting with camp was held at Condon last Sunday afternoon. We feel the counselors involved in the actual planning of camp events are more dedicated to their jobs, and offer insights on child-oriented events. We encourage all interested members to return their registration forms immedi ately, as there is a limit to the numbers that can be accomo dated. Registration will be taken in each county on a first-come basis. We are almost ready for, camp, so plan it into your family summer experience. Morrow County growers may want to reconsider their participation in the federal government's wheat set-aside program in anticipation of a target price hike to $3.40 a bushel, according u, Harold Kerr, Morrow County Exten sion Agent. President Carter has signed a farm bill passed recently by both the House and Senate which would permit the 1978 wheat target price to be raised to $3.40. Most Morrow County wheat producers have already signed up for the program, according to Kerr. But for those who have not signed, the deadline for enrollment has been extended to May 31. Once wheat growers have signed up, they still have until July 1 to make a final decision regarding compliance. By participating, growers become eligible for deficiency payments on wheat and can participate in the grain re serve and qualify for price support loans. The increase in the target price has a significant impact on the potential deficiency payment for which participa te growers will be eligible this fall. The deficiency payment is based on the difference between the wheat target price and the national average price for the first five months of the marketing year June to October. ' The national average price for wheat announced for mid-April was $2.83 per bush el. If this price holds through October, the potential defi ciency payment would be $3.40 minus $2.83, or 57 cents per bushel, times the grower's Cont. on page J I , -, . 1 1 , KV-----rrJcpM CS33?
