lone tennis 8 quad wins
season's last meet
Ione's farewell tennis match
of the season ended in a
downpour Tuesday, May 9,
canceling several games, but
the Cardinals managed to
salvage the contest, bringing
home a 3-1 win.
Rick Gilbert beat Sher
man's Rich Stevens in an 8-5
pro set, while fellow Card
Dennis Stefani outperformed
Alan Hart by an 8-4 margin.
Ione's Jerry McElligott saw
his singles match rained out.
In doubles competition,
Dennis Stefani and Dan McEl
ligott beat Brett Gray and
Bruce Olsen in an 8-4 pro set.
Artist to show
painting
An original oil painting by
Boardman artist Marylou
Carlson will be on display at
the Heppner branch of the
Bank of Eastern Oregon from
May 22 to June 2.
The painting was donated to
the Lydians, a countywide
Chrisitan Women's fellowship.
The Lydians plan to hold a
drawing for the painting, and
will be selling tickets for 50
cents each, or three for
one dollar. The tickets will be
available at the bank.

Burglary,
vandalism
rise in
Morrow
Burglary and vandalism
showed significant increases
in Morrow County during the
past year, according to statis
tics released recently by the
Oregon Enforcement Agen
cies' Law Enforcement Data
System.
In most other crime catego
ries, incidents remained at
about the same rate as the
previous year, or showed
slight decreases.
A total of 59 burglaries were
reported in Morrow County
during 1977, compared with 31
reported during the previous
year. Morrow County lawmen
reported 55 incidents of van
dalism last year, compared
with 43 incidents in 1976.
Other crime categories
showing increases included
aggravated assaults, with a
total of 12 logged countywide
in 1977, up from 7 reported
during the prebious year.
Drunk driving arrests were
also on the upswing, with 112
logged last year, compared
with 86 reported in 1976.
Arrests for other liquor law
violations also increased last
year, with 85 arrests made in
1977, up from 34 during the
previous year.
No murders were reported
in Morrow County during
either of the past two years.
Manslaughter and forcible
rape rates remained the
same, with one incident in
each category reported during
each of the past two years.
Larcenies remained about the
same, with 92 incidents repor
ted in 1977, down from 93
during the previous year.
Drug abuse arrests dipped
slightly last year, with a total
of 47 recorded, compared with
48 in 1976. All but one of last
year's drug arrests involved
marijuana.
On a statewide basis, Ore
gon reported 4.1 per cent
fewer index crime offenses in
1977 than in 1976.
Morrow County crime infor
mation was supplied to the
state by state police, Heppner
city police, and the Morrow
County Sheriff's office.
Teammates Clint Carlson and
Stuart Keene did not fare so
well, losing 7-9 to Mark
McNab and David Inman, in a
game that ended in driving
rain.
A third doubles match that
was to have featured Cardi
nals Fetsch and Mike Leavitt
was rained out.
Berths still open for
Junior Olympics meet
Youthful track competitors
through age 15 are still being
sought to participate in a
Junior Olympics qualifying
meet set for Saturday, May 13,
at the Heppner High School
track.
The meet, sponsored by the
Heppner Lions Club, is one of
60 qualifying meets being held
across the state. First and
second place finishers, if they
meet state qualifying stan
dards, will be eligible to a
statewide Junior Olympic fi
nals meet June 3 in Portland.
From there, winners may go
on to a regional meet in
Seattle, and the National
Junior Olympics in Lincoln,
Neb., this August.
During Saturday's meet,
ribbons will be awarded
winners in various track and
field cairories.
Weekend district track meet qualifier
Track squads from Hepp
ner, lone and Riverside high
schools will face nine com
peting teams this weekend in
the District 7-A track meet, a
qualifying contest for the state
finals.
Field event finals and pre
liminaries for all running
events will begin at 1 p.m.
Friday at Boardman. The
remaining finals will be held
in Condon, starting at noon.
Chances are good that
Heppner.'fresh from a win at
an invitational meet in Pen
dleton, and lone, upset winner
of the Big Sky tourney, will be
able to send representatives to
the May 19-20 state finals.
The weekend qualifying
meet will include both boys'
and girls' teams. In addition to
the three Morrow County
schools, teams will be fielded
from Wasco County, Sherman
County, Condon, Umatilla,
Oregon Trail, ' Pilot Rock,
Weston-McEwen, Helix and
Umapine.
First and second place
finishers, plus those who beat
qualifying standards, will be
eligible for the state meet, to
be held in Portland.
