Federal
incentive
payments
forivool
increase
Oregon sheep growers will
receive about $657,147 in
federal incentive payments on
their 1977 marketings of shorn
wool, while nationally, the
wool incentive payments will
total about $25 million. This
compares with $7 million in
payments made for 1976
marketings.
Payments for 1977 market
ings will be sharply higher
than for 1976 because the
support price for shorn wool
was increased from 72 to 99
cents per pound by the Food
and Agriculture Act of 1977.
The support level had been 72
cents a pound since 1970.
The 1977 national average
market price for shorn wool
was 72 cent per pound, 27 cents
under the support price.
Therefore, the payment rate
for 1977 marketings of shorn
wool the amount required to
bring the average price up to
the incentive price will be
37.5 per cent, compared to 9.6
per cent in 1976. At the 72 cents
a pound support price, there
would have been no payments
in 1977 marketings of shorn
wool.
The wool program is inten
ded to encourage a grower to
improve the quality of wool
with a grower's incentive
payment determined by multi
plying the payment rate times
the net dollar return received
from sale of the wool.
The payment rate will be
$1.08 per hundredweight on
unshorn lambs sold or slaugh
tered in 1977. Oregon growers
will get an additional $137,941
in unshorn lamb payments.
This payment is to compen
sate growers for wool on live
lambs they market. The
payment is based on the shorn
wool payment rate, the aver
age weight of wool per
hundredweight of lambs, and
the price of lamb's wool
relative to the national aver
age price for shorn wool.
Deductions of IVi cents per
pound from 1977 shorn wool
payments and 7 cents per
hundred pounds of liveweight
from 1977 lamb payments will
be made to finance adverti
sing, sales promotion and
related market development
activities. These deductions,
prvided for in the National
Wool Act of 1954, were
approved by an 85.5 per cent
favorable vote by sheepmen
voting in a November 1974
referendum.
