Mustangs stomp Cards,

It was billed as a three
way meet but it ended up
going all one way Heppner's
way as the Mustangs more
than tripled the point output of
runnerup lone and third place
Umatilla in last week's first
track meet of the season in
Heppner.
The final score was Heppner
110"2, lone 30"2 and Umatilla
29.
Richard Schmidt, Marty
Smith and Dan Nix each came
out as double winners in the
meet and overall the Mus
tangs won 11 of 17 events.
Schmidt took the high jump
(6'2") and the triple jump
(40'2"), Smith dominated the
weights with a 47'7" shot and a
127'6'2" discus throw and Nix
doubled in the 500 meter
(4:39.5) and the 3,000 meter
(10:30).
Also notching the five points
for a Mustang win were Sam
Myers in the 300 meter
intermediate hurdles (45.9),
Todd Sherer in the 800
(2:16.8), Bryan Marlin in the
long jump (19'11") and Dennis
Peck who set a junior class
record with a javelin heave of
164'.
For lone, Jerry Rietmann
and Les Thompson went 1-2 in
the pole vault.
Heppner had a virtual lock
on second place finishes,
including Dave Piper (6'0")
high jump, Jim Parker (41'2")
shot, Schmidt (19'2") long
jump, Marlin (38'10") triple
jump, Todd Sherer (4:40.5)
500, Dennis Peck (12.5) 100
and (25.7 ) 200, Jim Parker
(122'2") discus, Sam Myers
(55.5) 400, Smith (146'8")
javelin, and Larry Palmer
(10:43) 3,000.

Hurlers
Outstanding pitching per
formances highlighted Satur
day's double header action at
Mustang Field in which Hepp
ner earned a split of the
five-inning contests with
Adrian.
In the opener, John Turner
tossed a no-hitter at the
Mustangs and Adrian batters
pounded Heppner hurlers for
10 hits to post an 11-0 win.
Turner struck out five and
walked three and Heppner
defenders helped his cause
with six errors. Doug Bowers
and Dirk Miller both picked up
three hits, Miller's included a
double and a home run for 4
RBIs.
Lionel Wood started on the
mound for Heppner and was
relieved by Randy Worden in
the third. John Bier came in to
finish up in the fifth.
The second game saw Wor-
den turn in the good mound
performance as he threw a
four-hitter including eight
strikeouts and no walks.
Meanwhile the Heppner bat
ters were slapping nine hits off
Adrian pitching for a 7-1 win.
After scoring a lone run in
the first, the Mustangs came
back with three in the second
on a single by Scott Groshens,
a double by Worden and
one-baggers by Jim Kenny
and Dennis Peck. In the third
inning, Heppner parlayed
three more runs out of singles
by Mike Stookey and Curtis

Fillies
Heppner's Fillies romped to
eight wins in 14 events on their
way to thrashing both lone
and Umatilla in a three-way
track meet at Heppner last
week.
The Fillies collected 69
points to post their first meet
win of the year while the lady
Cards scored 40 to grab the
runnerup spot ahead of the
Vikings.
Showing particular strength
in the field, the Fillies took
four of five events. Maureen
Healy won the uncontested
high jump in 5'2", Kellie
Hammond and Bonnie Nix
went 1-2 in the shotput with
throws of 29'1" and 27'6''2",
respectively, and then re
versed the placings in the
javelin with tosses of 98'8'2"
and 96'8", respectively.
Healv picked up wins in
three mere events by taking
the long jump in 15'U", the 400
dominate baseball
Sweek followed by a walk and
an error.
Peck ended up going 2 for 3
with a double and 1 RBI,
Stookey was 2 for 3, Jim
Kenny was 1 for 1 and scored
three runs.
Monday, the Mustangs tra
veled to Umatilla where they

were turned in by Hammond
who ran the 100 in 14.1, and
Susan Johnson who took the
200 meter hurdles in 37.0.

ning the discus with a throw of
78'0" and Lisa Meyers leading
the way in the 800 with a time
of 2:49. Ione's 1,500 relay team
also placed first in the final
event.
Tina Lindstrom gained two
more seconds for lone with
times of 39.4 in the 200 meter
hurdles and 21.7 in the 100
meter high hurdles. Janet
McElligott was third in both
the shot and javelin, putting
the sphere 26'1" and throwing
the spear 82'11". Margaret
came up on the short end of a
3-2 score after an eighth inning
scoring opportunity failed to
produce.
Heppner didn't get on the
board until the sixth inning
when Groshens reached base
on an error, Kenny walked
and Dale Holland brought
home Groshens with a single.

finished third in the 200 in 32.1.
Kim Pettyjohn's 14.6 clocking
in the 100 also placed third.

included second place finishes
by Laurie Harrison in the 100
County invitational
meet is Saturday
Heppner will be out to defend its overall team
championship Saturday when 16 area track teams converge
on Riverside High School for the 10th Annual Morrow County
Invitational Track Meet.
Teams entered in the competition include Helix (last
year's boys winner), Oregon Trail (last year's girls winner),
Heppner (last year's combined winner), Riverside, lone,
Wheeler, Condon, Umatilla, Pilot Rock, Weston-McEwen,
Umapine, Prairie City, Union, Elgin, Enterprise and Joseph.
Field events will begin at 11:30 a.m. and running events
will start at 12:30 p.m.

seventh with another run
when Bryan Marlin walked
and was later singled home by
Groshens.
Peck went all the way on the
mound for Heppner, giving up
six hits and three runs, only
one of which was earned.
