Oregon 4-H Conference Dele
gates Our county delegates to the
"Know Your State Govern
ment Conference", Salem,
this year, will be Janet
McEUigott, lone, and Erin
Evans, Irrigon. Changes have
been made to make the
conference a new experience,
while still allowing the dele
gates to meet the Governor,
and other state officials.
Housing, and a number of
events, will be at the 4-H
Center, with other events at
the Capitol Building.
Purpose of the conference is
to allow an opportunity for
older 4-H members to learn,
first hand, about state govern
ment, meet elected officials,
as well as allowing govern
ment officials to meet the
4-H'ers from all over Oregon.
The event allows an opportu
nity for older members from
all counties to get acquainted
and share ideas.
Since our county quota was
two individuals, one represen
tative was selected from each
side of the county. Those
representing Morrow County
will be given opportunity to
share their experiences with
other 4-H'ers on their return
from the conference.
Essay Contest
An essay Dannette Daltoso,
Boardman, has been forwar
ded to state level as
Morrow County's entry in the
American Beekeeper's Essay
Contest. Topic of the contest
was "Pesticides and the
Honey Bee". Dannette chose a
creative way to tell the story
of both the dangers of pesti
cides to the bee, as well as the
value of both bees and
pesticides to farmers. Our
congratulations to Dannette
on a job well done!

Think Feminine!
Clothing and fabric stores
on main street Heppner pro
claim. ..It's spring! If you, too,
are thinking of buying or
sewing new spring fashions...
here are a few tips !
The biggest fashion trend
for women this year is skirts,
either as part of a dress, or
worn with bouses. Feminine
details include tucks, gathers,
ruffles, lace and trims. Big,
loose, and long are the key
words to describe the silhou
ette. Watch for blousons,
bigger vests and softly con
structed jackets, as well as
dirndle and tiered skirts.
If you are sewing your own,
you may want to spend some
time with special construction
techniques. Quilting and tuck
ing should be done before the
pattern pieces are laid on
fabric. Lace inserts a re easy...
stitch the edges of the lace on
fabric at designated places...
then cut away the fabric
behind the lace.
Accessories in the news
again include shawls of all
types, especially big squares.
These are easily made by
cutting a square of fabric and
fringing the edge, or edging
with lace or purchased fringe.
A 54 inch square is a nice size.
Sandals are the shoe news for
all outfits, with tiny straps...
and all heel heights.
Lingerie is even in the news
with camisoles showing
through the sheerer fabrics of
. the new softer blouses or tops.
Other lacy lingerie items
reminiscent of the 30's are
attracting the feminine buyer.
It is a feminine spring. ..and
all indications are that it is a

Weigh Day Report...
All indications point to
another big livestock auction
at county fair. ..with the beef
weigh day a successful begin
ning. Thirty one 4-H and FFA
steers were weighed and
evaluated last Saturday, with
bur friendly neighbor Ken
Killingsworth, Wheeler Coun
ty, giving expert advice to
each member as they brought
their animals to the scales.
Ken also gave tips on how he
expects the member to look in
the show ring, as well as the
animal! Pointing out bone
structure and present size of
each animal, Ken was able to
tell the members approxi
mately how many pounds gain
per day they should aim at to
bring their animal to top
shape for the sale in late
August.
With more animals to be
weighed Saturday, April 8, the
numbers of market beef
animals will equal or exceed
last year's sale. To be eligible
to sell and compete in the
Livestock Growers Contest,
animals must be weighed this
first week in April.
Following the weighing of
animals, Valerie Madison,
Echo, former 4-H member and
OSU graduate, gave fitting
and showing tips. In addition
to her experiences showing
4-H animals, Valerie has also
worked as herdsman for Ron
Baker, taking his show string
to a number of shows.
We appreciated the help of
Ken and Valerie, and their
expert advice, in preparing
4-H member for fair.. ..with
this kind of help, every animal
and member should be in top
shape!

4-H Leader
Rose
A quiet woman, who has served as a 4-H leader, and an
involved community person for many years. ...that is Rose
Wilson, Irrigon. Rose's clubs have a very different approach
to Geology. You may have seen some of their work at county
fair. With her assistance, the clubs have, for a number of
years, gathered interesting rocks and agates, polished them
to a high shine in a rock polisher purchased by club funds,
and made them into attractive key holders, cute little
rock-bug paper weights, and other interesting objects.
Rose is a faithful member of the north Morrow 4-H
leaders council, having served as treasurer for a number of
years. She also served as leader for other projects, prior to
her "Rock" clubs. She, as well as husband Chester, are
involved citizens of the Irrigon community. We appreciate
Rose... and offer our thanks to her for her contributions to
4-H!
