Today in Pendleton
Fillies head for district
Cards blast Umapine 70-56;
The Fillies tuned up for
today's (Thursday) district
tournament showdown by
walking over two conference
opponents in impressive fash
ion last weekend first,
swamping Oregon Trail 57-12
and then closing their regular
season schedule by running
past Riverside 59-17.
Heppner will take on Wasco
County in the first round of the
district tournament scheduled
for Thursday at 3 p.m. in the
Pendleton Armory.
Hosting Oregon Trail Fri
day, the Fillies held the
Blazers to only two points in
each of the first two periods
while totaling 28 points them
selves. Not until the fourth
quarter did Oregon Trail
reach double figures and by
that time the Fillies had
already crossed the half
century mark.
, Shelley Thompson came
through with her biggest
scoring output of the year,
totaling 14 points to lead
all scorers. Jackie Mollahan
added 12 points, Julie Grieb
had 10 and Maureen Healy
recorded eight points and 13
rebounds. ,
Heppner picked up 28 steals
in the game while turning the
ballover 22 times.
In their regular season
finale, the Fillies had only
seven healthy players but still
managed to get their run and
gun offense in high gear for a
59-17 rout of the Pirates.
Heppner tossed up 79 shots
in the game, hitting 21 for a 27
Rockets top
It took an overtime period to
do it, but Pilot Rock set back
Heppner Jr. High's 8th grade
Pony boys 47-42 Thursday at
Pilot Rock. It, was the second
loss of the year for the Ponies,
with both defeats coming at
the hand of the Rockets.
Heppner got off to a slow
start and had to battle back
from an eight-point deficit at
Pony girls ease by Pilot Rock 33-30
Holding off a late-game
Pilot Rock rally, despite
having two starters leave the
game on fouls, Heppner Jr.
High's 8th grade Pony girls
pulled out a 33-30 win over the
Rockets Thursday on the road.
The win, which coach Tere
sa Deford called the team's
best effort of the year, made
up for a season opening 44-12

Ponies in overtime 47-42

down by seven after three
periodr. but they outscored the
Rockets 16-9 in the final frame
to send the game into over
time. Three Ponies hit double
figures in the game with Doug
Holland leading the way with
14 points. Both Dorian Forrar
and Rick Klaus canned 10,
loss to Pilot Rock.
Sherri McMinn paved the
way to the win with 13 points
and Darcy Holloman added 10.
The Rockets were led by
Rocky Lambert and Rosilyn
Reeser, both with nine.
The first quarter ended
deadlocked at nine apiece
before the ponies broke loose
to take an 11-point margin at

overall mark and 9-3 record in
league play. Only one of
Heppner's seven josses came
by more than five points.

ment, the Fillies are still not
at full strength, with Jana
Steagall out of the lineup with
a foot injury and Wendy
Myers listed as a doubtful
starter due to an ankle sprain.

Rockets, hitting 19 of 44 shots
for 43 per cent.
The Ponies converted five of
nine free throws for 53 per
cent but the Rockets took
advantage of 22 trips to the
line and picked up 15 points.

period and came on strong in
the final quarter to come
within three.
"The win was an all out
team effort," Coach Deford
said. "The girls really wanted
to win this one and they came
through."

City League Results
VanMarter finally broke into the win column with a 56-44
win over Summers in the first game of city league basketball
action Sunda. Daryle Spivey paced the winners with 16
points, La Verne VanMarter added 14 and Frank Pearson had
11. Tom Day led the losers with 15 and Marvin Lane nailed
seven.
Twenty-two points from Jim Lankford and four, points
from Dave McLaughlin, Dave Eckman and Ken Eckman
pushed Eckman past Greenup 42-33 in the second game. Clint
Barber hit 14 and Don Barber, Mike Smith and Dana
Heideman each had four for the losers.
In the final game, Chuck Ernst poured in 32 points, Lee
Padberg hit 11 and Art Galbraith added 10 to lead Galbraith
past Watkins 62-40. John McCabe and Duane Neiffer both had
eight and Gary Watkins and Karmon Bjella hit six for
Watkins.

following night the Cards fell
victim to Arlington 74-41 to put
the pressure on for a stretch
run at a district tourney berth.
Friday at Umapine the
Cards used a 26 point second
period scoring burst to over
come a five point deficit and
take control of the game. lone
stretched its nine point half
time lead to 14 after three
periods and from there, coas
ted to the win.
Putting down 31 of their 76
shots for 41 per cent, lone out
shot the hosts who connected
on 26 of 68 for 38 per cent. The
Cards also showed an edge at
the free throw line, hitting
eight of 16 compared to 4 of 11
for Umapine.
While picking up his 26
points, Stefani also dished out
eight assists to his team
mates. Kevin McCabe ended
the game with 15 points to go
along with a game-high 14
rebounds and Robin LaRue
added 14 points and eight
boards. McCabe and LaRue
led lone to a 47-37 rebounding
advantage in the game.
Dan McElligott turned in a
good all around performance
with eight points, six steals
and five assists while Rick
Gilbert, Dennis Thompson and
John Lindstrom each scored a
pair.
The next night at Arlington,
the Cards got left in the
starting gate again but this
time they couldn't recover as
the Honkers blasted them for
the third time in three
encounters this season.
"We just couldn't get the
ball to drop," Card coach Del
LaRue said of his team, which
hit only 17 of 61 shots for 28 per
cent.
Meanwhile, the Honkers
were nailing 30 of their 60
shots and outscoring the Cards
in every period. Arlington
controlled the game under the '
boards, pulling down 45 re
bounds to 24 for lone. The
Cards did hit seven of ten free
throws but were still left
behind in that department as
the Honkers canned 14 of 23.
Kevin McCabe paced the
Cards with 13 points and also
led in rebounding with seven.

in league play with three
games remaining Helix and
Umapine at home this week
end and Helix on the road. The
cards are faced with a
must-win situation in two of
the three games if they are to
reach the district playoffs.
Holloman had seven, Cindi
Bergstrom six, Sherri Mc
Minn four, Donna Devin two
and Karen Kenny one.
"We weren't playing good
defense until the last two
quarters but we managed to
pull it out," Deford said.
The Ponies closed their
season with a 7-3 record. .
