Traveling to Echo to kick off
a weekend of back to back
conference contests, Heppner
picked up CBC win number
one over Oregon Trail in a
hard-fought 51-50 game.
The Mustangs had to come
from behind after a cold
shooting first quarter during
which OT took a six point lead.
The Blazers stretched the
margin to eight by intermis
sion but Heppner sprang a full
court press to open the second
half and began cutting down
the lead.
Entering the final period,
the Mustangs held a two-point
edge as Jim Parker, Sam
Myers and Gordon Hoffnagle
came off the bench to spark
the comeback. Heppner shot
50 per cent from the floor in
the third period after misfir
ing for 17 and 31 per cent in the
opening two quarters. In the
critical final period, the Mus
tangs canned 44 per cent of
their shots.
Heppner was up by one with
23 seconds remaining when
Ken Grieb intercepted a pass
and drove the lane. His shot
was blocked but Grieb got his
own rebound and put it in for a
three point lead. '
Grieb had eight points for
the night while Bryan Marlin
led all scorers with 16. Dennis
Peck scored seven and Dale
Holland added six for the
Mustangs. Myers also tossed
in six and Hoffnagle contri

Ranger press and cashed in on
several easy buckets.
A total of 48 fouls were

Still reeling from an all out
effort the night before, Hepp
ner never could quite turn the
corner as they fell short
against Weston-McEwen 71-67
Saturday at Athena.
Poor passing, too- many
fouls and carryover effects
from their game against
Oregon Trail combined to hurt
the Mustangs, said coach Tom
Day.
"We simply ran out of steam
in the fourth quarter," Day
said. "We turned the ball over
too many times and we sent
them to the foul line too many
times."
Weston-McEwen picked up
19 points at the line on 30
attempts while Heppner hit
nine of 17 free throws. Both
teams got into foul trouble and
had to look to their substitutes
for help.
The game was close
throughout as Heppner stayed
within striking distance but
never took the lead. The
Mustangs were down by five
after the first period and
trailed by only a pair at the
half. With their run and gun
type offense clicking in the
third period, the Tiger-Scots '
were able to increase their
lead to six as Kim Sams nailed

Myers also picked up six
points and half a dozen

was one of their better games
of the year and the 53 per cent
effort from the foul line was
also an improvement.
Weston-McEwen got a taste
of the Heppner press in the
second quarter when the
Mustangs reduced the Tiger
Scot lead to two points.
"We were burned some
because of the press," Day
said. "But we also caused
them a lot of problems."
Day credited his team with
good hustling defense through
out both weekend games. The
loss dropped the Mustangs to
1-2 in the CBC East, giving
them sole possession of third
place.

The junior varsity Mustangs
started the week with a loss to
Riverside but finished up with
two big wins over Oregon
Trail and Weston-McEwen to
bring their season record to
6-4.
In the first game of the
week, Heppner watched its
two point lead after three
quarters disappear beneath a
26 point Pirate deluge in the
final period as Riverside took
a 57-40 win.
Bob Miller and Lionel Wood
both scored 12 points to lead
the Mustangs while Ron
Young and Larry Palmer
turned in good defensive
performances. Heppner shot
42 per cent from the floor in
the game but the Pirates' big
fourth quarter was too much
to handle.
Thursday, Heppner avenged
an early season one point loss
to Oregon Trail by stopping
the Blazers 57-44. The outcome
was never in doubt as Heppner
took an 18-2 lead after the
opening period and held a 13
point advantage at halftime
behind the perfect five for five
shooting of Mike Stookey.
